Transport – Madhya Pradesh Expands Bus Network Ahead of Raksha Bandhan

Transport – The Madhya Pradesh government is preparing to introduce a large-scale public transportation programme aimed at improving travel facilities across the state, with special attention on women commuters ahead of the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival. The initiative is expected to strengthen connectivity in both urban and rural regions while making travel safer and more convenient.

New Transport Service to Begin in Phases

Under the proposed Chief Minister Easy Transport Service, state authorities plan to expand access to organized bus transportation across Madhya Pradesh. The scheme is being designed to address transportation challenges that have persisted for years, especially in villages and remote locations where residents often depend on overcrowded private vehicles due to limited public transport options.

Officials believe the new arrangement will provide a dependable alternative for daily commuters and festival travellers, particularly women who require secure and accessible transport facilities.

Government Focuses on Strengthening Public Transport

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated through a social media post that the service will be formally introduced around Raksha Bandhan, although the project itself is part of a broader long-term transportation strategy. According to the state government, detailed planning is underway to ensure gradual implementation across different regions.

The administration has emphasized the need to rebuild and modernize public transport services throughout the state. Officials noted that improved infrastructure in recent years, including better roads and enhanced utility services in rural areas, has created favourable conditions for expanding bus operations.

Indore Region Selected for Initial Rollout

The first phase of the project will begin in the Indore division, where services under both the Chief Minister Easy Transport Service and the Central government’s PM e-Bus Seva programme are scheduled to start from July.

Management and operation of buses within the Indore division will be handled by Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited (AICTSL), which will oversee route planning and service execution.

Extensive Route Network Planned

During the initial stage, buses will operate across three major categories of routes originating from Indore. The first category will connect the city with districts across Madhya Pradesh through 121 intercity routes supported by 608 buses. The second category will focus on local and suburban connectivity within Indore through 28 routes. The third category will cover interstate travel, linking Madhya Pradesh with neighbouring states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh through 101 routes operated by 276 buses.

This network is expected to improve travel options for thousands of passengers while supporting economic and social movement between regions.

Electric Buses to Enhance Urban Mobility

As part of the modernization effort, 150 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Seva programme are expected to begin operations in Indore from July. The introduction of electric vehicles is intended to improve public transportation efficiency while supporting cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility.

Statewide Expansion Targets Hundreds of Routes

Beyond Indore, the government has prepared an extensive roadmap for transportation services across Madhya Pradesh. Authorities have identified 620 routes connecting seven regional headquarters with district headquarters, where more than 2,400 buses are planned to operate.

The broader vision includes a network of 1,164 routes served by 5,206 buses across all seven administrative regions. Once fully implemented, the programme is expected to substantially improve accessibility for residents and strengthen transportation links between cities, towns and villages.

Expected Benefits for Women and Rural Communities

The initiative is expected to play a significant role in improving mobility for women while providing safer and more organized travel options throughout the state. Better connectivity could also support economic activity, reduce dependence on unsafe transportation methods and contribute to a more efficient public transport system across Madhya Pradesh.
