TrafficUpdate – Hundreds of residents, tourists and daily commuters experienced major travel disruptions across Shimla on Tuesday after a protest by advocates led to the blockage of a key road, resulting in heavy traffic congestion in several parts of the city. The situation created long delays for motorists and public transport users, with many people remaining stranded for extended periods.

Road Blockade Triggers Citywide Congestion

The disruption began after advocates staged a protest linked to an entry and challan-related matter, affecting traffic movement near Chhota Shimla and surrounding areas. The blockade quickly impacted major routes, causing vehicle queues to stretch across different sections of the hill town. The situation became more challenging as Shimla is currently witnessing a significant influx of tourists during the summer travel season.

Local resident Sonal Sharma said the traffic situation severely affected people trying to reach their destinations. She explained that a journey of only a few kilometres turned into a lengthy wait because of the road closure. According to her, demonstrations near government offices and administrative areas often create similar traffic difficulties for the public.

Tourist Influx Adds Pressure on Existing Infrastructure

Residents noted that the ongoing holiday season has further increased pressure on Shimla’s transport network. Large numbers of visitors arriving in the city have led to higher traffic volumes, making it difficult for authorities to manage sudden disruptions.

Sharma pointed out that bus services were delayed due to traffic diversions, forcing commuters to wait longer than usual. She added that Shimla’s infrastructure was originally designed to support a much smaller population and vehicle count, while tourism and urban growth have expanded rapidly over the years. As a result, even temporary disruptions can create widespread congestion.

School Children Among Those Affected

The traffic jam also created difficulties for school transport services. School taxi driver Amit Kumar said his vehicle carrying 22 children became trapped in traffic shortly after school dismissal. He explained that parents were repeatedly contacting drivers for updates, concerned about when their children would return home.

Kumar said many students would normally have reached their homes by that time, but the traffic standstill significantly delayed their journey. He appealed to authorities to consider special arrangements for school vehicles during protests and public demonstrations to ensure that children are not affected by such situations.

Residents Struggle to Complete Daily Travel

Several local residents described the difficulties they faced while attempting to navigate the city. Kajal, another commuter affected by the congestion, said she had been forced to switch buses and use alternate routes in an effort to continue her journey.

Despite trying different transportation options, she was unable to find a convenient way to travel and eventually had to continue on foot with her child. She said the traffic disruption caused considerable inconvenience for residents who were simply trying to reach home or complete routine daily tasks.

Authorities Work to Restore Normal Movement

The traffic congestion led to extensive delays for office workers, students, tourists and local residents across multiple routes. Long lines of vehicles were reported on several roads as traffic movement remained slow for hours.

Officials and traffic personnel worked to manage the situation and gradually ease congestion in affected areas. Authorities focused on regulating vehicle movement and clearing blocked routes in an effort to restore normal traffic flow and reduce inconvenience for the public.
