Srinagar traffic diversions vp visit

The Vice President is scheduled to attend the 21st convocation ceremony at the University of Kashmir on Thursday, where he will serve as the chief guest. Authorities said the measures are aimed at ensuring smooth movement of the VVIP convoy and maintaining public safety during the high-profile event.

Traffic Advisory Issued for Key Routes

On Tuesday, the Traffic Police Srinagar released a detailed advisory outlining road closures and diversions across several parts of the city. According to officials, vehicular movement towards Nishat, Shalimar, Harwan and surrounding areas via Badyari Chowk and Gupkar will not be permitted on the day of the visit.

Similarly, traffic from Ram Munshibagh heading towards Hotel Grand Palace will remain suspended. Commuters on this stretch will be redirected through Dalgate, Sangermal and Ikhwan Chowk to reach their destinations.

Authorities further stated that no vehicles will be allowed on the Dalgate–Khayam–Khanyar–Rainawari–Saidkadal–Hazratbal corridor during the restriction period. The exact timing of the curbs will depend on the movement of the VVIP convoy.

Alternative Routes for Commuters

Motorists travelling from Harwan, Shalimar, Nishat, Ganderbal and nearby localities towards Lal Chowk have been advised to use the Burzahama route. The suggested path includes Chandpora, Tailbal, Zakoora, Malbagh, Illahibagh and the 90 Feet Road, and will operate in both directions.

Those commuting from Dalgate and Lal Chowk towards Harwan, Shalimar and Nishat have been directed to take the Sangermal–Ikhwan Chowk–Nowhatta–90 Feet–Malbagh road network to avoid disruption.

Passengers heading to Srinagar Airport from Harwan, Shalimar and Nishat will also be allowed to travel through Burzahama, Chandpora, Tailbal, Zakoora, Malbagh, Illahibagh and 90 Feet Road. Vehicles moving from Panthachowk and Pandrethan towards Ram Munshibagh will be routed via Peaks Motors Nowgam.

Traffic officials have requested citizens to plan their journeys in advance and cooperate with personnel deployed on the ground. In case of medical emergencies, movement will be facilitated after necessary verification. Residents can seek assistance from the Traffic Police Control Room by dialing 103.

Security Agencies Hold Review Meeting

Alongside traffic management, security arrangements have been significantly strengthened across Srinagar. Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) V.K. Virdi chaired a comprehensive review meeting to assess preparedness for the Vice President’s visit. Representatives from multiple security agencies participated in the discussions.

Officials said coordination among different departments has been prioritised to ensure that every aspect of the visit is handled without lapses. Special attention has been given to route security, crowd management and access control around the university campus.

University Venue Sanitised and Sealed

Security teams have carried out thorough checks at the main venue inside the University of Kashmir, where the convocation ceremony will take place. The premises have been sanitised and sealed as part of standard operating procedures for VVIP events.

Additional personnel have been deployed within the campus as well as along the designated route that will be used for the Vice President’s arrival and departure. Surveillance and monitoring systems have also been strengthened to maintain vigilance throughout the programme.

This will be C.P. Radhakrishnan’s first official visit to the Union Territory since assuming office on September 9, 2025. The administration has expressed confidence that the arrangements will ensure a secure and orderly event while minimising inconvenience to the public.
