Tourism – Kashmir School Renamed to Honor Pahalgam Attack Hero

Tourism –  The Jammu and Kashmir administration has renamed a government school in Anantnag district in memory of Adil Hussain Shah, the pony operator who lost his life while trying to protect tourists during the deadly Pahalgam terror attack last year.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following a cabinet meeting chaired by him. Government High School Hapatnard in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has now been officially renamed as Shaheed Adil Memorial High School Hapatnard.

Government Honors Courage Displayed During Deadly Attack

Adil Hussain Shah was among the 26 people killed in the terror strike that took place on April 22, 2025, at the Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam. According to officials, terrorists opened fire on a group of visitors at the tourist destination, killing 25 tourists along with Adil, who was present at the location during the attack.

Authorities and eyewitness accounts stated that Adil attempted to confront one of the attackers and tried to snatch away a weapon in an effort to save innocent civilians caught in the firing. His actions during the chaos drew widespread praise across the region and the country.

Renaming Ceremony Attended by Family Members

The formal ceremony marking the renaming of the school was led by Education Minister Sakeena Itoo in the presence of Adil’s family members and local residents.

During the event, the minister described the move as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice shown by Adil at a time of extreme danger. She said his actions reflected humanity, bravery, and the spirit of protecting others without concern for personal safety.

According to Itoo, Adil came from a modest background but displayed exceptional courage when faced with violence. She noted that while panic spread at the site and people tried to escape, he chose to stand his ground and help tourists who were under attack.

Symbol of Courage and Kashmiriyat

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister said Adil’s sacrifice had become a matter of pride for the people of Kashmir. She added that his conduct represented the true values of Kashmiriyat, often described as the region’s long-standing tradition of compassion, coexistence, and hospitality.

Government officials stated that the renaming of the educational institution was intended to preserve his memory for future generations. The administration believes students studying at the school will continue to learn about his bravery and selfless actions in the years ahead.

The move has also been viewed as an effort to recognize ordinary citizens who show extraordinary courage during difficult circumstances.

Family Expresses Gratitude to Administration

Adil’s brother, Syed Naushad, thanked the Jammu and Kashmir government for honoring his sibling in such a meaningful way. He said the occasion was deeply emotional and a proud moment for the family.

Naushad stated that naming the school after Adil would help keep his memory alive not only in Kashmir but across the country. He added that the recognition would remind people of the sacrifice he made while trying to save others during the attack.

The Pahalgam terror incident had triggered grief and condemnation across India last year, with political leaders and citizens paying tribute to the victims. The government’s latest decision is being seen as a lasting memorial to one of the civilians whose courage stood out during the tragedy.
