Technology – Andhra Pradesh Set to Host Massive Google AI Data Hub

Technology – Andhra Pradesh is preparing for a major technological milestone as Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a large-scale artificial intelligence data centre backed by Google in Visakhapatnam on April 28. The initiative signals a significant shift in the state’s economic and technological direction, placing it firmly within the global digital ecosystem.

Landmark Investment Signals New Growth Phase

The proposed project involves an estimated investment of $15 billion, making it one of the largest foreign direct investments ever seen in India. Officials believe the scale and ambition of the project will elevate Visakhapatnam’s profile from a coastal industrial hub to a globally recognised centre for advanced technology infrastructure.

Spread across nearly 600 acres in locations such as Tarluwada, Adavivaram, and Rambilli, the facility is designed as a hyperscale AI data centre with a planned capacity of 1 gigawatt. This level of capacity places it among the most powerful data infrastructure projects currently planned in the region.

Strategic Policy Push Behind the Project

The development has been facilitated by the government’s focus on improving the ease and speed of doing business. Authorities have highlighted that streamlined approvals and investor-friendly policies played a key role in attracting such a large-scale global investment.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Chief Minister described the project as a turning point for the state. He noted that Visakhapatnam’s identity is set to evolve beyond its traditional association as a port city, positioning it instead as a global data and technology centre.

Boost to Employment and Skill Development

One of the most significant outcomes of the project is expected to be job creation. Thousands of roles are likely to emerge across sectors such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data science, and infrastructure maintenance.

Industry experts point out that the ripple effect could extend well beyond direct employment. Supporting industries—including power systems, cooling solutions, server manufacturing, and network infrastructure—are expected to see increased demand, encouraging further investment and innovation within the state.

Global Connectivity Through Advanced Infrastructure

The data centre will benefit from undersea cable connectivity, allowing direct digital links with multiple countries. This feature is expected to enhance data transfer speeds and reliability, making Visakhapatnam an attractive destination for global technology operations.

Its coastal location provides a natural advantage for establishing submarine cable landing stations, which are essential for international data exchange. This geographical benefit has been a key factor in selecting the city for such a major project.

Collaboration with Industry Partners

The project will be developed in collaboration with key industry players, including AdaniConneX and Airtel Nxtra. Their involvement is expected to strengthen the technical and operational framework of the facility, ensuring global standards in data management and infrastructure.

The state government has also outlined plans to develop a broader digital ecosystem with a long-term target of achieving a combined data capacity of 6.5 gigawatts across Andhra Pradesh.

Focus on Sustainable Energy Solutions

To support the massive energy requirements of data centres, the government is working on ensuring access to reliable and environmentally sustainable power sources. Plans are being explored to integrate green energy solutions, aligning the project with broader sustainability goals.

Part of a Larger National Vision

The initiative aligns with India’s long-term development roadmap, aiming to strengthen the country’s position in emerging technologies. By attracting global investments and building advanced infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a key contributor to the nation’s digital future.

With construction set to begin soon, the project is expected to reshape the region’s economic landscape, creating new opportunities while reinforcing India’s role in the global technology sector.
