Tamil Nadu Solar Power – State Sets New Single-Day Generation Record
Tamil Nadu Solar Power – Tamil Nadu has registered its highest-ever single-day solar electricity generation, with favourable summer weather helping photovoltaic plants deliver a strong contribution to the state’s power supply. On Monday, solar facilities across the state produced 60.4 million units of electricity, marking a new benchmark for clean energy generation.
Previous Solar Output Mark Surpassed
The latest figure exceeded the earlier record of 58.6 million units, achieved on April 18. The increase came as clear skies, longer daylight hours and sustained summer heat created suitable conditions for solar plants to operate at high capacity through the day.
Data released by Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited showed that the state’s overall electricity consumption stood at 429.057 million units on the same day. Officials said solar generation helped meet a sizeable share of daytime demand and eased pressure on conventional thermal power stations.
Strong Sunshine Supports Daytime Demand
Energy department officials attributed the record output mainly to uninterrupted sunshine across several parts of the state. Solar plants were able to generate electricity steadily during peak daylight hours, when demand from homes, offices, businesses and industries typically remains high.
The performance also highlights the growing role of solar energy in Tamil Nadu’s broader electricity mix. As more renewable projects come online, the state has been able to reduce its dependence on fossil-fuel-based power during periods of strong solar availability.
Natural Conditions Aid Solar Expansion
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited officials said the state receives substantial solar radiation for close to 300 days a year. This climatic advantage has made Tamil Nadu an important location for large-scale solar projects and has supported the government’s plans to expand renewable energy infrastructure.
The state’s solar capacity has increased sharply over the past year. Installed capacity rose from 10,153 MW on March 31, 2025, to 13,909 MW by May 31, adding 3,756 MW in roughly a year.
Investments Drive Capacity Growth
The expansion has been supported by utility-scale solar parks, private investment and the growing use of solar projects by farmers and commercial establishments. Participation from landowners and investors has also helped create greater confidence around the state’s renewable energy targets.
Officials said solar installations are increasingly being viewed as a practical option for generating power while creating new income opportunities in rural and commercial areas. The continuing addition of capacity is expected to improve the state’s ability to manage electricity demand during the summer months.
Target Set for Further Additions
TNGECL has set a target of adding at least 5,000 MW of solar capacity during the current financial year. The corporation expects continued investor interest and support from the farming community to play an important role in meeting the goal.
The new generation record is seen as another indicator of Tamil Nadu’s strengthening position in India’s clean energy sector. With solar power becoming a larger part of the electricity system, the state aims to improve long-term energy security, limit dependence on thermal generation and support a more sustainable power supply.
