TaiwanSecurity – Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) has reported the detection of eight Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels operating in waters surrounding Taiwan, highlighting the continued military activity taking place in the region. The announcement was made on Thursday as authorities closely monitored movements near the island.
According to a statement released by the MND on social media platform X, the eight naval vessels were observed around Taiwan up to 6 a.m. local time. Taiwan’s armed forces tracked the activity and maintained appropriate responses throughout the monitoring period. The ministry noted that no Chinese military aircraft were detected in the area during the same timeframe, and therefore no flight path information was released.
Naval Activity Continues for Several Consecutive Days
The latest detection follows similar reports issued earlier this week. On Wednesday, Taiwan’s defense authorities recorded the presence of six Chinese naval vessels operating near the island. A day earlier, officials had also reported six PLAN ships in surrounding waters.
In both cases, the MND stated that Taiwan’s military had monitored the vessels and taken necessary measures in response. The repeated sightings indicate a continuing pattern of Chinese naval operations around Taiwan, an issue that has remained under close observation by regional security analysts and international observers.
Taiwan Advances Indigenous Submarine Program
Amid increasing military activity in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan is also continuing efforts to strengthen its own defense capabilities. Earlier this month, the country’s first domestically built submarine departed from the Port of Kaohsiung to conduct another round of sea trials.
Local media outlet Focus Taiwan reported that the testing phase included underwater operational assessments and diving exercises. Information released through Taiwan’s Military News Agency indicated that the submarine’s latest mission marked its 15th overall sea trial and its ninth submerged navigation test.
The submarine program is viewed as a significant milestone in Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its defense infrastructure and improve maritime security capabilities.
Rising Cross-Strait Tensions Remain a Concern
The ongoing military developments come against the backdrop of growing tensions between China and Taiwan. Beijing has steadily increased military operations around the island in recent years, including naval patrols, aircraft deployments, and military exercises.
Chinese authorities maintain that Taiwan is an integral part of China and have repeatedly emphasized their position through official policies and public statements. Beijing’s stance remains a central element of its national strategy regarding cross-strait relations.
Taiwan, however, continues to operate with its own government, military, economic system, and democratic institutions. The island’s leadership has consistently emphasized its separate administrative structure and self-governing status.
