SteelPlantAccident – A tragic industrial accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh has claimed the lives of eight workers and left six others injured, prompting authorities to launch a detailed investigation into the incident. Officials have confirmed that a committee of experts has been formed to determine the cause of the accident and suggest measures aimed at improving workplace safety.
Expert Panel Begins Investigation
Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma visited the accident site on Tuesday and reviewed the situation with plant authorities. Speaking to the media afterward, he said that a three-member expert panel would immediately begin its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the mishap.
According to the minister, the committee has been tasked with examining operational procedures, identifying any lapses, and recommending steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. He emphasized that ensuring worker safety remains a top priority for both the state and central governments.
Condition of Injured Workers
Officials reported that six workers sustained injuries during the accident. While most are receiving treatment and remain stable, two individuals are said to be in critical condition and continue to receive intensive medical care.
Authorities are closely monitoring their health status and have instructed hospitals to provide all necessary medical support. State officials have also assured families that every effort is being made to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured employees.
Compensation Package Under Consideration
The government is in the process of finalizing financial assistance for the families affected by the tragedy. Srinivasa Varma stated that permanent employees’ families may receive benefits amounting to nearly Rs 1.7 crore, while families of temporary workers could receive support ranging between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 45 lakh.
A final decision regarding compensation and related welfare measures is expected within the next few days. Officials indicated that the package would include both immediate relief and long-term assistance.
Senior Leaders Review Situation
A day earlier, several senior leaders visited the steel plant to assess the impact of the accident. Union Ministers HD Kumaraswamy and Ram Mohan Naidu, along with Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha and Member of Parliament Sribharat, inspected the affected area and reviewed the response efforts.
Their visit focused on evaluating safety conditions, interacting with officials, and ensuring that support systems for affected workers and their families were functioning effectively.
Molten Steel Leak Led to Tragedy
The accident occurred on Monday after a significant leak of molten steel was reported from one of the operational units of the steel plant. Preliminary information suggests that the incident originated in facilities associated with steel production processes, resulting in a deadly chain of events that caused multiple casualties and injuries.
Investigators are expected to analyze technical data and operational records as part of the inquiry to establish the exact sequence of events.
Relief Announced by Government
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced financial assistance for those impacted by the tragedy. Families of the deceased workers will receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh, while injured employees will be provided Rs 10 lakh each.
In addition, the minister assured workers that the government stands firmly behind them during this difficult period. He also confirmed that families of deceased employees would be allowed to continue residing in company-provided housing until the employee’s notional retirement age. Educational support for their children will also be arranged.
Prime Minister and Chief Minister Respond
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced aid from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Under the relief package, the families of those who lost their lives will receive Rs 2 lakh each, while injured workers will be granted Rs 50,000.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting with senior officials and directed authorities to ensure that all injured workers receive timely and high-quality medical treatment.
