SkillDevelopment – Visakhapatnam Secures Major Boost for Youth Training Initiative
SkillDevelopment – A significant push to vocational training and workforce development has come to Visakhapatnam after the approval of an investment worth Rs 200.21 crore for the city’s Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Cluster under the Prime Minister’s Skill Education and Training Upgradation (PM-SETU) programme. The initiative is expected to strengthen technical education facilities and create better employment opportunities for young people across the region.

Support From Centre and Industry Partners
Visakhapatnam Member of Parliament Matukumilli Sribharat welcomed the approval and described it as an important milestone for skill development in Andhra Pradesh. He expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary for extending the programme to Visakhapatnam.
The MP also acknowledged the contribution of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India and other partner organisations associated with the project. According to him, collaboration between government agencies and industry stakeholders will play a key role in ensuring the programme achieves its objectives effectively.
Andhra Pradesh Leads Industry-Driven Implementation
Sribharat noted that Andhra Pradesh has become the first state in the country to implement the PM-SETU programme through an industry-led partnership framework. He said this approach is designed to align training programmes more closely with the requirements of modern industries, helping students acquire practical and job-ready skills.
The initiative is expected to modernise existing training infrastructure by introducing upgraded facilities, advanced equipment, and improved learning environments. These developments are intended to prepare trainees for employment opportunities in emerging sectors and evolving industrial landscapes.
Training Opportunities for Thousands of Youth
Officials associated with the programme estimate that more than 25,000 young people will benefit from advanced skill training over the next five years. The project aims to provide industry-relevant education that enhances employability and supports career growth for students entering the workforce.
A major focus of the programme is to strengthen connections between training institutions and employers. By improving industry engagement, the initiative seeks to ensure that trainees gain practical exposure and access to employment opportunities after completing their courses.
Strong Emphasis on Employment Outcomes
One of the key goals of the PM-SETU project is to achieve placement outcomes of around 75 percent. The enhanced infrastructure and closer collaboration with industry are expected to improve job prospects for graduates and contribute to a more skilled workforce in the region.
Experts believe that investments in vocational education can play a vital role in addressing skill gaps and meeting the growing demand for trained professionals across multiple sectors. The Visakhapatnam ITI Cluster is expected to become an important centre for technical learning and workforce preparation.
Continued Focus on Development Initiatives
Sribharat stated that efforts would continue to attract additional central government programmes and investments to Visakhapatnam. He said such initiatives are important for creating opportunities for young people and supporting the long-term economic development of the city and surrounding areas.
The newly approved investment is being viewed as a significant step toward enhancing skill development capabilities, improving employment readiness, and building a stronger foundation for future workforce growth in Andhra Pradesh.
