ShivSena – Defections Deepen Challenges for Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra
ShivSena – A fresh political development in Maharashtra has intensified pressure on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray after at least two of the party’s six rebel Lok Sabha members officially joined the faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The move has reignited debate over the party’s internal stability and its preparedness for upcoming electoral contests.

Leaders Declare Political Move a Success
The latest defections came amid claims from leaders of the ruling alliance that efforts to expand their political strength had achieved the desired outcome. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked that the ongoing political exercise had been successful, while Eknath Shinde indicated that strategic initiatives undertaken by his camp are always carried through to completion. Their comments were viewed as a clear acknowledgment of the political operation that had been widely discussed in recent weeks.
MPs Cite Development Concerns Behind Switch
Among those who confirmed their decision to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena were MPs Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar. Explaining his move, Ashtikar said the lack of access to government resources and development funds had made it difficult to address public expectations in his constituency.
According to him, voters elected their representatives with the hope that local issues would be resolved and development projects would move forward. However, he argued that being outside the ruling establishment limited his ability to secure adequate funding. He also pointed out that the available MPLAD allocation was insufficient to meet broader developmental needs, which influenced his decision to change sides.
Growing Frustration Within the Party
Apart from financial concerns, dissatisfaction over the party’s recent electoral performance also emerged as a key factor. Several leaders reportedly felt disappointed by the results of recent local body elections, where Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates struggled to make significant gains.
Ashtikar, who represents the Hingoli parliamentary constituency, stated that he and several others had remained committed to the party until mid-June. However, certain remarks made against them later contributed to a shift in their thinking. Though he did not name individuals directly, his comments appeared to be directed at statements made by senior party leader Sanjay Raut.
With speculation surrounding the political operation growing over the past few weeks, Ashtikar publicly confirmed for the first time that he had formally joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction.
Raut Claims Rebels Remain in Contact
Despite the setbacks, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut maintained that communication channels with some of the dissident MPs remain open. Speaking to journalists, the Rajya Sabha member claimed that concerns about public reaction in their constituencies have left several rebel lawmakers uneasy.
Raut said a few of the MPs continue to stay in touch with party leaders and discussions are underway with at least two of them. He suggested that if any of the legislators felt they had taken the wrong political path, dialogue could still take place regarding their future.
Questions Over Future Political Strategy
The latest defections have added another layer of uncertainty to Maharashtra’s political landscape. For Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT), the departures raise important questions about organizational unity and leadership ahead of future elections. At the same time, the Shinde camp views the development as evidence of its growing influence within the state’s political framework.
