SEOKeyword – Constitutional values and democratic governance remain national priorities.- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975 should serve as more than a reminder of a difficult period in India’s political history. He said the occasion provides an opportunity for the country to reaffirm its faith in democracy, constitutional principles, and the rights guaranteed to every citizen. His remarks came as India observed 51 years since the Emergency was imposed under the government led by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Rajnath Singh Recalls Impact of the Emergency
Speaking through a post on X, Rajnath Singh described the Emergency as one of the most challenging periods in the history of independent India’s democratic system. He stated that fundamental freedoms were severely restricted during that time, including the freedom of speech and expression. According to the Defence Minister, there were also attempts to weaken the independence of the judiciary, while the constitutional rights of millions of citizens were affected.
He said the events of that period remain an important reminder of the consequences that arise when excessive authority is concentrated in the hands of those in power. Singh added that democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards become vulnerable whenever governance moves in an authoritarian direction.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to the Constitution
Highlighting the significance of the anniversary, Singh said the day should not be viewed only through the lens of history. Instead, he urged citizens to use the occasion to strengthen their collective commitment to democratic values and constitutional governance.
The Defence Minister said the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains committed to protecting the Constitution in both its intent and implementation. He added that the government continues to focus on strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that citizens’ rights and freedoms remain protected.
Tribute to Those Who Defended Democracy
Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to individuals who opposed the Emergency and stood in support of democratic principles despite difficult circumstances. He said the nation continues to owe gratitude to those who resisted what he described as injustices during that period and worked to preserve constitutional values.
According to Singh, their efforts played an important role in safeguarding India’s democratic framework, and their contribution continues to be remembered as part of the country’s political history.
BJP Marks Emergency Anniversary Across States
As part of the anniversary observance, the Bharatiya Janata Party is organising programmes under the banner of ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ in Bihar, Haryana, and several other states. The events are intended to commemorate the declaration of the Emergency and highlight its impact on India’s democratic institutions.
The BJP has consistently referred to the Emergency as one of the darkest chapters in the country’s democratic journey, while using the anniversary to underline the importance of constitutional governance and civil liberties. The observance also reflects the party’s continued emphasis on preserving democratic traditions and encouraging public awareness about the constitutional significance of the period.
