Security – A senior Maoist operative identified as Rupi was killed on Monday during a gunfight with security personnel in the forested region of Kanker district in Chhattisgarh. The encounter took place roughly 180 kilometres south of Raipur, marking a significant development in ongoing anti-insurgency operations in the Bastar division.
Operation Based on Specific Intelligence Inputs
According to officials, the operation was initiated after receiving precise intelligence about Maoist movement in the Machpalli–Aramjhora–Hidur forest belt. This area lies along the boundary of the Chotebethiya and Partapur police station limits, which has historically witnessed insurgent activity.
Security forces moved into the dense terrain early in the day, aiming to intercept the group. During the search operation, personnel reportedly came under fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire that lasted for a considerable period.
Recovery of Weapons and Supplies
After the encounter subsided, a detailed search of the area was conducted by the forces. Rupi’s body was recovered from the site along with a pistol, ammunition, and other materials typically used by Maoist cadres in forest operations. Officials stated that the recovered items indicate active involvement in armed activities.
Authorities confirmed that Rupi held the position of Area Committee Member, a role considered important within the Maoist organisational structure. Her presence in the region had been under surveillance for some time.
End of Telugu Maoist Leadership in Bastar
With Rupi’s death, officials believe a long-standing chapter in the Bastar insurgency has come to a close. The Telugu-speaking leadership, which once played a central role in shaping Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh, is now said to have effectively disappeared from the region.
Security experts have noted that over the years, sustained operations and internal changes within the insurgent ranks have weakened this leadership base. Rupi was reportedly among the last active members linked to that phase of the movement.
Personal Background Linked to Senior Maoist Figure
Rupi was married to Vijay Reddy, who was associated with the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, a key decision-making body within the Maoist framework. Reddy himself was killed in an earlier encounter in 2025 in the Manpur–Mohla area of the state.
Officials suggest that such familial links often played a role in sustaining networks within the insurgency, though recent developments indicate a gradual breakdown of these structures.
Authorities Renew Appeal for Surrender
Senior police officials reiterated that the government continues to offer opportunities for Maoist cadres to surrender and join rehabilitation programmes. In recent months, several individuals have reportedly chosen to give up arms and return to civilian life.
However, authorities stated that those who continue to engage in violence face increasing pressure from ongoing security operations. Officials emphasized that the current strategy combines enforcement with outreach, aiming to reduce both active participation and support networks.
Search Operations Continue in Surrounding Areas
Following the encounter, additional forces have been deployed in the surrounding forest areas to ensure no remaining insurgents are present nearby. Search operations are ongoing in the Machpalli–Aramjhora–Hidur belt, with teams combing through difficult terrain.
Security agencies remain on alert, as such regions often serve as transit or hideout zones for small Maoist groups. Officials indicated that operations will continue in the coming days based on intelligence inputs.
