Agriculture – Government Orders Action After Farmers Report Seed-Related Crop Loss

Agriculture –  Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered swift action following complaints from farmers in Madhya Pradesh who reported significant crop damage linked to allegedly poor-quality seeds.

Agriculture action seed crop loss

The issue came to light after a group of young farmers from Dhar and Khargone districts met the minister at his official residence in New Delhi. During the interaction, they described how their bitter gourd cultivation suffered severe setbacks, which they attributed to defective seeds and saplings purchased earlier in the season.

Farmers Describe Extent of Crop Damage

According to the farmers, the seeds and saplings were procured in November 2025 through local nurseries and agricultural service providers. However, after sowing, the crop did not develop as expected. The plants showed weak growth, while the fruits remained undersized, turned yellow prematurely, and dropped before maturity.

This unexpected outcome led to heavy financial losses, particularly for small and marginal farmers who had invested their savings into the crop cycle. Many of them expressed concern over the reliability of agricultural inputs available in the market.

Minister Calls for Immediate Compensation

Taking the matter seriously, the minister directed officials to ensure that affected farmers receive compensation without unnecessary delay. He emphasized that farmers’ efforts and trust must be protected, and any negligence in supplying agricultural inputs would not be tolerated.

In an official statement, he underlined the need for accountability, stating that strict legal action would be taken against those found responsible for supplying substandard materials.

FIR Registered and Investigation Underway

Following these directions, authorities registered a First Information Report at Manawar Police Station in Dhar district. The case has been filed against Nunhems India Private Limited, with FIR No. 266 recorded as per official confirmation.

The case includes charges under multiple legal provisions, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Essential Commodities Act, and the Seeds Act. Police have initiated an investigation to examine the role of the company and its supply chain in the matter.

Preliminary Findings Raise Concerns

Earlier, on February 17, 2026, farmers had formally lodged a complaint regarding the issue. A preliminary inquiry conducted by agricultural experts reportedly found initial evidence suggesting that substandard seeds may have been sold as certified products. Additionally, the saplings distributed were also found to be defective.

These findings have raised broader concerns about quality control mechanisms in the agricultural supply system, particularly regarding seed certification and distribution practices.

Focus on Monitoring and Seed Quality Checks

The minister has also instructed officials to closely examine the ‘Rubasta’ variety of bitter gourd seeds, which has been linked to the complaints. He called for stricter monitoring of seed quality and urged authorities to strengthen oversight across the supply chain to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Officials confirmed that the process of assessing crop losses is currently underway. This evaluation will play a key role in determining the extent of compensation to be provided to affected farmers.

Ensuring Accountability in Agricultural Inputs

The development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in ensuring the quality of agricultural inputs. It also underscores the importance of regulatory vigilance and timely intervention when such issues arise.

Authorities are expected to continue their investigation while also reviewing existing systems to enhance transparency and accountability in the distribution of seeds and other farming materials.
