SafetyMeasures – Delhi Fire Department Pushes for Mandatory Fire Protection in Homes
SafetyMeasures – A sharp rise in fire-related emergencies across Delhi has prompted the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) to recommend stricter safety measures for residential properties. The department has urged the government to make the installation of smoke detectors and automatic sprinkler systems compulsory in all housing units, stating that such measures could significantly lower fatalities caused by fires. Officials believe widespread adoption of these systems could prevent the vast majority of fire-related deaths and improve emergency response outcomes.

Fire Tragedy Claims Another Life
The recommendation comes in the wake of a deadly hotel fire in the Malviya Nagar area of south Delhi. Authorities confirmed that a foreign national who had suffered critical burn injuries during the incident passed away while undergoing treatment on Wednesday. With this development, the number of people who have lost their lives in the fire has increased to 23.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over fire preparedness and safety infrastructure in both commercial and residential buildings. Emergency response teams continue to monitor the condition of those injured in the blaze.
Hospital Provides Update on Injured Patients
According to an official statement issued by Max Hospital in Saket, several victims of the hotel fire remain under medical supervision. Hospital authorities reported that nine patients are currently receiving treatment at the facility.
Of those admitted, seven individuals are expected to be discharged soon after showing steady improvement. One patient remains under intensive care, while the others are recovering in general wards. Doctors said all admitted patients are clinically stable and responding positively to treatment.
The hospital added that medical teams are maintaining continuous monitoring and providing comprehensive care to support the recovery process and ensure the best possible outcomes for those affected.
Investigation into Rapid Spread of Blaze
Efforts are now underway to understand how the fire expanded so quickly through the hotel premises. Sources indicated that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi is likely to be involved in a detailed examination of the building structure and the fire’s movement pattern.
Experts are expected to assess construction materials, safety systems, and other factors that may have contributed to the rapid spread of flames. Findings from the study could help authorities improve fire safety standards and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Summer Heat Linked to Increase in Fire Emergencies
Fire department officials noted that the number of fire incidents traditionally rises during the summer season, particularly across northern India. High temperatures and dry conditions often create circumstances that increase the risk of accidental fires in homes, commercial establishments, and public spaces.
According to DFS officials, the department has already received approximately 1,000 more fire-related calls this year compared with the same period last year. Authorities said this pattern is consistent with trends observed during previous summers, when elevated temperatures often lead to a noticeable increase in emergency responses.
Focus on Prevention and Preparedness
With fire incidents continuing to climb, officials are emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and public awareness. The proposed requirement for smoke detectors and sprinkler systems is being viewed as a proactive step toward reducing casualties and minimizing property damage.
Experts believe that early detection and automatic fire suppression systems can provide critical time for evacuation, helping save lives before emergency teams arrive. The latest recommendation is expected to form part of broader discussions on strengthening fire safety regulations across the capital.
