RajyaSabhaElection – The unexpected defeat of the Congress candidate in the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha election has sparked sharp exchanges among parties within the INDIA bloc, exposing growing tensions among alliance partners. The result has triggered accusations and counter-allegations between Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), raising questions about unity within the opposition coalition in the state.

Congress Points to Alleged Lack of Support

Soon after the election results were announced, Jharkhand Congress in-charge K. Raju claimed that the party had received complete backing from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) but failed to secure expected support from some alliance partners.

According to Raju, Congress legislators and additional votes received from JMM should have strengthened the party’s position. However, he alleged that the final outcome reflected a breakdown of support from RJD and CPI(ML), resulting in the defeat of the Congress nominee. His remarks immediately intensified political tensions within the alliance.

RJD Rejects Congress Allegations

The RJD strongly dismissed the accusations and criticized Congress leaders for attempting to shift responsibility. State minister and RJD legislator Sanjay Prasad Yadav described the allegations as baseless and maintained that all four RJD legislators voted in favor of the Congress-backed candidate.

Yadav stated that RJD follows its own political principles and does not engage in the kind of political conduct being alleged by Congress. He further questioned how Congress leadership failed to identify internal issues within its own ranks while remaining in close contact with party legislators throughout the voting process.

RJD General Secretary Bhola Yadav also responded strongly, urging Congress to conduct an internal review before accusing alliance partners. He said the party should focus on understanding the reasons behind its setback instead of blaming others.

CPI(ML) Defends Its Voting Record

CPI(ML) leaders also denied any suggestion that their legislators failed to support the INDIA bloc candidate. The party asserted that both of its MLAs voted exactly as decided by the alliance before the election.

Senior CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya stated through a social media post that the party had strictly adhered to the agreed strategy. He noted that senior party representatives verified the voting process and confirmed that both legislators supported the Congress candidate.

The clarification was intended to counter speculation surrounding possible cross-voting and reinforce the party’s commitment to alliance decisions.

Smaller Parties Object to Blame Game

CPI(ML) MLA Arup Chatterjee criticized what he described as a tendency among larger political parties to transfer responsibility to smaller allies whenever electoral setbacks occur.

He emphasized that the facts were clear and that both CPI(ML) legislators had voted in favor of the INDIA alliance nominee. Chatterjee argued that smaller coalition partners should not be used as convenient targets when unexpected results emerge.

BJP-Backed Independent Registers Key Victory

The election produced a significant political surprise when BJP-supported independent candidate Parimal Nathwani secured a return to the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand. His victory came despite the ruling alliance holding a numerical advantage in the state Assembly, making the result particularly embarrassing for Congress.

Meanwhile, JMM candidate Baidyanath Ram comfortably won his seat after securing 30 votes. Out of the 81 votes cast by Assembly members, three ballots were declared invalid during the counting process.

Questions Over Alliance Cohesion

Political observers believe the outcome has highlighted underlying disagreements among INDIA bloc partners in Jharkhand. Differences regarding candidate selection and political representation had surfaced before the election, and the latest developments appear to have widened those divisions.

With allegations of cross-voting continuing to dominate political discussions, the Rajya Sabha result has become more than an electoral contest. It has also emerged as a test of trust and coordination among opposition parties seeking to maintain a united front in the state.
