Rainfall – Overnight Downpour Brings Waterlogging Across Mumbai

Despite the heavy showers, authorities reported that road and rail transportation remained largely functional, while major subways across the city continued to stay open.

Mumbai rainfall causes citywide waterlogging

IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai Region

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar district at around 4 a.m. The warning highlighted the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, extremely heavy rainfall, and strong winds reaching speeds between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour. The alert remained active for a three-hour period as weather conditions intensified across the region.

Railway Tracks at Dadar Covered by Rainwater

One of the most striking scenes emerged from Dadar Railway Station, where railway tracks near Platform No. 5 were submerged after continuous overnight rainfall. Images from the location showed water levels rising close to the edge of the platform, reflecting the intensity of the downpour that affected central parts of the city.

Train Operations Return to Normal on Trans Harbour Line

Railway authorities confirmed that services on the Trans Harbour Line resumed normal operations after temporary interruptions caused by heavy rain. Both the up route from Vashi-Panvel towards Thane and the down route from Thane towards Vashi-Panvel became fully operational again. The restoration of services brought relief to thousands of daily passengers who rely on the corridor for regular travel.

Waterlogging Disrupts Movement in Several Areas

Large stretches of Mumbai experienced water accumulation after continuous rain overnight. Multiple roads reported waterlogging, forcing motorists to move carefully amid poor visibility and challenging driving conditions. Several localities, including Hindmata, Matunga, Kurla and parts of Andheri, witnessed flooded streets that slowed traffic and created inconvenience for commuters.

Authorities also received reports of waterlogging from Bandra East and Everard Nagar. In some locations, public movement was restricted as precautionary measures were implemented to ensure safety. Visuals from across the city showed inundated roads, partially submerged railway infrastructure and vehicles navigating through standing water.

Civic Agencies Closely Monitoring Conditions

Municipal and emergency response teams remained on alert throughout the morning as rainfall continued across Mumbai. Officials have been monitoring vulnerable locations and drainage systems to prevent further disruptions. The focus remains on maintaining transportation services and ensuring public safety while weather conditions remain unstable.

Alerts Extended to Neighbouring Districts

The weather warning was not limited to Mumbai alone. Thane district has been placed under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts remain under a yellow alert as authorities monitor changing weather conditions.

Several towns in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Kalyan, Dombivli, Karjat and Neral, recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall from late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Meteorologists continue to track the system closely, warning residents to stay updated with official advisories as the monsoon remains active across Maharashtra.
