Railways – New Entry System Planned to Improve Delhi Station Crowd Flow
Railways – A routine day at New Delhi Railway Station could soon take on a more structured appearance, with authorities preparing to introduce a new system aimed at easing passenger movement. While the station will continue to handle large crowds, officials are working on measures that could make navigation more orderly and less stressful for travelers.
Trial of QR-Based Entry System
One of the key changes under consideration is the introduction of QR code-based entry at the station. Under this system, passengers may be required to scan a code before entering the premises. The move is expected to be tested initially on a pilot basis.
In addition, separate entry channels are likely to be designated for passengers based on ticket type. Those with reserved tickets, monthly passes, and unreserved tickets would be directed through different gates. This segregation is intended to reduce congestion at entry points, particularly during high-traffic periods.
Authorities plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the system during peak festive seasons such as Diwali and Chhath Puja, when passenger numbers typically surge to their highest levels.
Push for Safer Crowd Management
The proposed changes follow a high-level review led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, focusing on safety and improved crowd control. Officials acknowledged that previous instances of overcrowding had exposed gaps in station management.
A major concern arose after a stampede incident in 2025 during the festive rush, which resulted in multiple casualties. The tragedy highlighted the urgent need for better systems to manage large crowds and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Improved Identification of Staff
Another visible change passengers may notice is the introduction of standardized attire for station personnel. Railway staff are expected to wear fluorescent jackets, making them easier to identify in crowded areas.
Similarly, vendors, porters, and personnel associated with catering services will be assigned color-coded uniforms. Each individual will also carry proper identification, allowing passengers to quickly recognize authorized staff and seek assistance when needed.
Strengthening Surveillance and Security
Security infrastructure at the station is also set for a significant upgrade. Plans include installing a network of surveillance cameras across platforms, entry and exit gates, and other high-footfall zones.
These cameras will be connected to a centralized control room capable of monitoring activity in real time. If any unusual movement or potential risk is detected, alerts can be generated instantly, enabling quicker response from security teams.
Enhancing Services Beyond the Station
The initiative is not limited to the station premises alone. Authorities are also working to improve last-mile connectivity for passengers. Through the RailOne mobile application, users will be able to access transportation services linked with Bharat Taxi.
This integration is expected to simplify travel arrangements for passengers arriving at or departing from the station, reducing the hassle of finding reliable transport options.
Possible Expansion Across Northern Region
The new system will first be introduced at New Delhi Railway Station as part of a controlled rollout. Officials will closely monitor its performance, especially during peak travel periods.
If the trial proves successful, similar measures could be extended to other stations across the northern railway zone. The broader goal is to create a safer and more efficient travel experience for millions of passengers who rely on the railway network daily.
