Railway Disruptions – Heavy Rain Affects Mumbai Region Train Services
Railway Disruptions – Heavy rain across parts of Maharashtra disrupted rail operations on Wednesday, July 8, with waterlogging affecting train movement on sections of Central Railway and Western Railway. Several districts around Mumbai reported difficult conditions as persistent showers and strong winds interfered with daily travel and public transport services.
Central Railway Alters Long-Distance Train Routes
Central Railway said some mail and express services were diverted after water accumulated on the tracks between Neral and Bhivpuri Road stations. The affected stretch falls on an important route used by passengers travelling between Mumbai and destinations beyond the metropolitan area.
Railway officials advised travellers to review revised schedules before leaving for stations. Passengers have been asked to use the National Train Enquiry System, or NTES app, for the latest information on train timings and route changes.
Weather Alert Issued for Thane District
The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Thane district, warning of heavy to very heavy rain along with strong winds. The forecast indicated that the Mumbai region could continue to receive intermittent rain through the day.
According to the weather department, some locations in Mumbai and its suburbs may experience intense spells of rainfall. Gusty winds reaching speeds of about 60 to 70 kilometres per hour are also likely during the period.
MEMU Services Cancelled on Key Routes
The Mumbai division of Central Railway cancelled several Mainline Electric Multiple Unit, or MEMU, services due to the weather situation. The cancellations included trains operating on Panvel–Vasai Road, Dahanu Road and Dombivli–Borivali routes.
These services are used by commuters travelling across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and neighbouring areas. Railway authorities are monitoring track conditions and operational safety as rain continues in the region.
Mumbai Local Train Operations Remain Largely Normal
Despite disruptions to some longer-distance and MEMU services, local train operations on several Central Railway corridors continued without major interruption. Services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Khopoli, as well as the CSMT–Kasara section, were reported to be running normally.
Trains on the Harbour Line from CSMT towards Goregaon and Panvel were also operating on schedule. On the Trans-Harbour Line, services from Thane to Vashi and Panvel continued. Local trains on the Port Line between Belapur, Nerul and Uran were also running.
Commuters were nevertheless advised to allow extra travel time, as weather conditions can change quickly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Waterlogging Also Impacts Western Railway Services
Western Railway faced disruptions after waterlogging was reported between Sachin and Bhestan stations. The affected conditions led to the cancellation and rescheduling of several train services.
Railway officials have not indicated when all affected services will return to their regular schedules. Passengers planning travel through the impacted routes have been advised to check updated information before starting their journeys.
The continuing rain has placed transport agencies on alert across the Mumbai metropolitan region. Authorities are expected to issue further updates depending on rainfall intensity, wind conditions and the status of railway tracks.
