RailConnectivity – Direct Vande Bharat Train to Link Jammu and Srinagar from April 30
RailConnectivity – A significant development in northern India’s transport network is set to transform travel between Jammu and Srinagar, as a direct Vande Bharat train service is scheduled to begin operations on April 30. This new service is expected to improve accessibility across Jammu and Kashmir by offering a reliable rail link that functions efficiently even during harsh winter conditions.

Direct Link Between Winter and Summer Capitals
Officials confirmed that the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train will now operate along the full route connecting Jammu, the winter capital, and Srinagar, the summer capital of the Union Territory. Until now, the service was limited to the stretch between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar. The extension marks an important milestone in strengthening regional connectivity.
The inauguration of this expanded service is expected to be carried out by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Once operational, passengers will be able to travel directly between the two cities without changing trains or facing interruptions.
Reduced Dependence on Road Travel
The new rail service is likely to ease pressure on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, which often faces disruptions due to landslides, snowfall, and adverse weather conditions. By offering a dependable alternative, the train is expected to improve travel consistency throughout the year.
Authorities believe the project will not only simplify transportation but also support economic growth. Improved connectivity is anticipated to encourage tourism, facilitate trade, and make essential services like healthcare and education more accessible to residents.
Journey Time and Key Stops
The train will cover a distance of approximately 267 kilometers in around 5 hours and 15 minutes, operating at speeds of up to 160 km/h. Designed with 20 fully air-conditioned coaches, the train aims to provide a comfortable travel experience.
Along the route, it will stop at key stations including Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Reasi district and Bijbehara in south Kashmir. These stops are expected to benefit both pilgrims and local commuters.
Advanced Winter Technology for Extreme Conditions
One of the most notable features of this Vande Bharat train is its ability to operate efficiently in extremely cold weather. For the first time, Indian Railways has introduced advanced winterisation technology to ensure uninterrupted service in sub-zero temperatures.
Officials explained that self-regulating heating cables have been installed to prevent water pipelines from freezing. These cables automatically adjust their temperature based on external conditions, ensuring consistent performance.
Additionally, water tanks are equipped with high-capacity silicon heating pads, while bio-toilets and auxiliary systems include dedicated heating mechanisms to maintain hygiene and functionality during winter months.
Enhanced Safety and Passenger Comfort
To improve safety and visibility, the driver’s cabin features a built-in heating element in the windshield, which helps prevent fogging during snowfall and dense fog. This ensures better operational control in challenging weather.
Protective measures have also been implemented to safeguard critical components from damage caused by track debris. Stainless steel covers have been fitted over sensitive areas near the water tanks, enhancing durability.
The train is also equipped with CCTV surveillance systems and an energy-efficient regenerative braking system, contributing to both passenger safety and sustainable operations.
Meeting Long-Standing Demand
Railway officials highlighted that this direct service addresses a long-pending demand from residents and travelers in the region. According to senior officials, the aim goes beyond reducing travel time; it focuses on providing uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year.
The introduction of this train service represents a major step toward integrating the Kashmir Valley more closely with the rest of the country, ensuring smoother movement of people and goods regardless of seasonal challenges.
