RailBlast – Late-Night Explosion Damages Track in Punjab’s Patiala District
RailBlast – A late-night explosion on a railway line in Punjab’s Patiala district caused partial damage to the track and has prompted a detailed multi-agency probe. The incident occurred near Bothonia village, between Shambhu and Rajpura, raising fresh questions about infrastructure security in the region.

Initial Findings Point to Possible Involvement of Deceased Individual
Police officials confirmed that a severely mutilated body recovered from the blast site has been identified as Jagroop Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran. Early indications suggest he may have been attempting to place an explosive device when it detonated, leading to his death. However, authorities have clarified that the investigation is still in its preliminary phase, and no conclusion has been drawn.
Investigators are examining all possibilities, including whether the individual acted alone or had assistance. Officials emphasized that the evidence collected so far is being carefully analysed before confirming any theory.
Evidence Collected from Site Under Examination
The explosion, reported around 10 pm on a freight railway line, led to limited damage but disrupted operations temporarily. Some train services were diverted as a precautionary measure while authorities secured the area.
At the site, teams recovered several items, including wires, suspected explosive materials, two motorcycles, and a damaged mobile phone. These items have been sent for forensic examination to help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the blast.
A senior police officer noted that the physical evidence suggests the explosion may have occurred during the handling or placement of the device. However, investigators are also looking into the possibility of a larger network being involved.
Forensic Teams and Security Agencies Step In
Following the incident, forensic experts and bomb disposal units were deployed to assess the nature and intensity of the blast. Their primary focus is to determine the composition of the explosive and whether it was part of a planned act of sabotage.
Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma stated that while the explosion was not powerful, it was significant enough to damage the railway track. He added that repair work is ongoing and that officials are working to restore normal operations at the earliest.
Senior officers, including Deputy Inspector General Kuldeep Singh Chahal, along with personnel from the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force, visited the site soon after the incident to oversee the initial investigation.
Similar Incident Earlier This Year Raises Concerns
The latest development comes months after a similar explosion was reported in January on a freight corridor in Sirhind, located in Fatehgarh Sahib district. That incident caused damage to a locomotive and left its driver injured, adding to concerns about repeated disruptions targeting railway infrastructure.
Authorities are now reviewing whether there is any connection between the two incidents, although no official link has been established so far.
Political Reactions Highlight Law and Order Debate
The explosion has sparked reactions from political leaders, with opposition parties expressing concern over the state’s security situation. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring described the incident as troubling and warned that public safety must remain a priority.
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also commented on the matter, calling it part of a concerning trend. He questioned the government’s preparedness and response, alleging gaps in maintaining law and order.
Investigation Continues Amid Heightened Vigilance
Officials have reiterated that their immediate focus is on uncovering the facts behind the explosion. Security agencies are coordinating efforts to determine whether the incident was isolated or part of a broader plan.
Meanwhile, railway authorities have increased vigilance along key routes, and repair work at the affected site is progressing to ensure minimal disruption to services.
