RacialHarassment – Delhi CM Orders Action After Malviya Nagar Incident
RacialHarassment – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has stepped in after reports surfaced of alleged racial harassment involving three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area.

Chief Minister Responds to Allegations
On Wednesday, Gupta said the government would not tolerate any form of misconduct against residents from the Northeast living in the national capital. The statement came after videos related to the case circulated on social media platforms, prompting public concern.
In a video message shared on X, the Chief Minister acknowledged the matter and said she had been alerted after several individuals tagged her in posts regarding the incident. She assured that she would personally meet the women involved and review the situation.
Gupta underlined that Delhi belongs to people from every corner of the country and that all residents are entitled to equal rights and protection under the law.
Details of the Malviya Nagar Dispute
The case centres on three women from Arunachal Pradesh who were staying in a rented accommodation in Malviya Nagar. According to police accounts, the dispute began on February 20 over repair work at the property.
During the disagreement, their neighbours—identified as Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain—allegedly directed racial slurs at the women and used derogatory language. Reports indicate that the confrontation escalated, with the women claiming they were insulted, humiliated, and intimidated.
The alleged use of offensive remarks, including accusations questioning their character, has drawn widespread criticism and renewed discussions about the safety and dignity of Northeast residents in metropolitan cities.
Police Action and Arrests
Delhi Police confirmed that a First Information Report was registered soon after the complaint was filed. The accused couple was arrested five days following the reported incident.
Authorities said the case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. These include provisions related to outraging the modesty of a woman and promoting enmity based on religion, race, or similar grounds.
In addition, relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked based on the available evidence.
Officials stated that the investigation has been transferred to an officer of Assistant Commissioner of Police rank. Senior officers are supervising the probe to ensure a thorough examination of the allegations.
Assurance to Northeast Community
In her message, Gupta reiterated that individuals who travel to Delhi from various states contribute significantly to the city’s social and economic life. She stressed that no one should face discrimination or harassment because of their background.
The Chief Minister said she plans to engage not only with the women involved in this case but also with members of the broader Northeast community in Delhi. According to her statement, the government is prepared to consider policy measures if needed to address recurring concerns.
She also encouraged residents to reach out directly to her office regarding issues affecting their safety or well-being.
Wider Concerns Over Discrimination
Incidents involving alleged racial discrimination against people from India’s Northeast have surfaced periodically in large urban centres. Community groups have long called for stronger safeguards and greater awareness to prevent such episodes.
The latest case has once again highlighted the need for prompt police response and institutional support when allegations of racial harassment arise.
For now, the focus remains on the ongoing investigation. Authorities have indicated that further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry, and that due legal process will be followed.
