A Historic Journey to the Nation’s Highest Office

President Droupadi Murmu holds a unique place in India’s democratic history as the country’s 15th President. She became the first tribal President of India and only the second woman to occupy the highest constitutional office.

Her rise from a modest background to Rashtrapati Bhavan is widely regarded as a significant milestone in India’s democratic journey. Many see her success as a symbol of opportunity, representation, and determination for communities that have traditionally remained on the margins of society.

Early Life Marked by Challenges and Determination

Born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, Droupadi Murmu grew up in a Santhali tribal family. Her childhood was shaped by economic hardships and limited access to resources, conditions that were common in many remote regions of the state.

Despite these challenges, she pursued education and gradually entered public life, building a career that would later take her to some of the country’s most important constitutional positions.

Distinguished Career in Public Service

Before becoming President, Murmu served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. During her tenure, she made history as the first tribal woman to hold the gubernatorial post in a tribal-majority state.

Earlier, she represented her constituency in the Odisha Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2009. During that period, she handled several ministerial responsibilities, including portfolios related to Commerce and Transport, as well as Fisheries and Animal Resources Development.

Throughout her political career, she remained closely associated with initiatives focused on tribal welfare, education, healthcare, and the preservation of indigenous traditions and cultural heritage.

Recognition for Legislative Excellence

President Murmu’s contribution to public life has also been recognized through several honors. In 2007, she received the prestigious Pandit Nilakantha Das Best Legislator Award, acknowledging her performance and commitment as a lawmaker.

As she marks another year of public service and leadership, tributes from across the political spectrum reflect the respect she continues to command for her dedication to the nation and its people.
