Politics – TVK-Led Alliance Opens New Chapter for Congress in Tamil Nadu

Politics –  The Congress party is preparing to re-enter the Tamil Nadu Cabinet after a gap of more than five decades following the formation of the new government led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay. The political development comes after the party secured ministerial representation through a post-election alliance arrangement with TVK.

Vijay Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

A large swearing-in ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, where C. Joseph Vijay officially assumed office as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay along with nine ministers inducted into the first phase of the Cabinet.

TVK, which entered electoral politics under Vijay’s leadership for the first time in an Assembly election, emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly by securing 108 seats. However, the party remained short of the required majority mark of 118 seats needed to independently form the government.

Alliance Support Helps TVK Cross Majority Mark

Following the hung Assembly verdict, TVK initiated talks with several parties to secure support for government formation. Congress eventually agreed to back the Vijay-led alliance after consultations involving senior leaders of the All India Congress Committee in New Delhi.

Apart from Congress, the new government also received support from parties including the CPI, CPI(M), IUML and VCK. Their combined support enabled TVK to comfortably establish a majority in the Assembly and formally stake claim to power.

Congress had contested the election as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and fielded candidates in 28 constituencies. The party, however, managed to win only five seats. Despite the limited electoral performance, the Congress leadership viewed participation in the government as politically important for the party’s future presence in Tamil Nadu.

Congress Set for Cabinet Representation After Decades

The inclusion of Congress ministers in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet is being seen as a significant political moment. For several decades, the party had remained without ministerial positions in the state despite being a frequent alliance partner in different coalitions.

Party workers had repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction in the past over Congress being denied Cabinet berths even when alliance governments came to power. Political observers recall that in 2006, the Congress won 34 Assembly seats while supporting the DMK government from outside, yet did not receive representation in the state ministry.

This latest arrangement is therefore being viewed as a major shift in the state’s coalition politics and an opportunity for Congress to regain administrative visibility in Tamil Nadu.

Discussions Continue Over Ministerial Nominees

Senior Congress leader and AICC observer for Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, confirmed that consultations regarding the party’s ministerial nominees are still in progress. According to him, the party leadership is taking time to finalise the names that will represent Congress in the Cabinet.

He stated that there was no urgency for Congress ministers to take oath immediately and that discussions with the national leadership in Delhi were continuing before the final announcement is made.

Sources within the party indicated that Melur MLA P. Viswanathan and Killiyoor MLA S. Rajeshkumar are among the leading contenders for the ministerial positions allotted to Congress.

Rajeshkumar currently serves as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Viswanathan drew considerable public attention during the Assembly elections after securing victory from a general constituency despite belonging to the Scheduled Caste community.

New Political Equation Shapes Tamil Nadu Government

The formation of the TVK-led administration marks the beginning of a fresh political alignment in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s successful transition from cinema to electoral politics has reshaped the state’s political landscape, while Congress’ expected return to the Cabinet adds another notable dimension to the newly formed coalition government.

Political analysts believe the alliance could influence future electoral strategies and coalition dynamics in the state, particularly as regional and national parties continue to reposition themselves ahead of upcoming elections.
