Politics – Stalin Criticises Delimitation Move Ahead of Tamil Nadu Polls
Politics – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday strongly opposed the Centre’s proposed delimitation exercise, describing it as unfair to states that have effectively managed population growth and achieved steady economic progress.

Delimitation Row Sparks Political Tension
In a video statement shared on social media, Stalin argued that the proposed changes could disadvantage states like Tamil Nadu that have prioritised development and population control. He suggested that such measures risk undermining the state’s long-standing growth model.
His comments came shortly after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed to secure the required majority in Parliament, delaying any immediate progress on delimitation reforms. The remarks also arrive just days before Tamil Nadu heads into a single-phase election scheduled for April 23, where the ruling DMK alliance will face the NDA led by AIADMK.
Strong Opposition to Centre’s Proposal
Stalin took a firm stance against the Union government, stating that the delimitation proposal appeared to penalise states that had performed well on key development indicators. He noted that he had been among the first leaders to publicly oppose the bill, even leading protests against it.
According to him, the resistance mounted by his party and supporters played a role in halting the bill’s progress. He framed the issue as not just political but also one that could impact the future balance of representation and development across states.
Reflecting on Leadership and Political Legacy
During his address, Stalin also referred to past criticisms directed at him during the 2021 Assembly elections. Some opponents had claimed he would be “more dangerous” than his father, former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Responding to those remarks, Stalin clarified that he does not see himself as comparable to his father, whom he has always regarded as a guiding leader. However, he added that he would remain firm and uncompromising when it comes to protecting Tamil Nadu’s interests and growth.
Highlighting Welfare and Economic Progress
The Chief Minister outlined several initiatives introduced during his tenure, emphasising welfare schemes and economic performance. He said his government’s work over the past five years spans multiple sectors and reflects a commitment to inclusive development.
Among the initiatives he highlighted were maternity assistance programmes, free bus travel for women, hostels for working women, and doorstep healthcare services. He also pointed to education-focused schemes such as free breakfast programmes in schools, distribution of laptops, and skill development initiatives aimed at preparing young people for future opportunities.
Stalin underscored the importance of education, describing it as a lasting asset that cannot be taken away. He said the government’s policies are designed to ensure that young people have access to opportunities that support long-term growth.
Economic Growth and Governance Claims
The Chief Minister stated that Tamil Nadu had recorded 11.19 percent economic growth after more than a decade, attributing this to consistent policy focus and inclusive governance. While acknowledging that there may have been minor shortcomings, he said corrective steps had already been taken.
He maintained that the state’s development model remains strong and that continuity in governance would be crucial for sustaining progress.
Accusations Against BJP and AIADMK
Stalin also criticised the BJP, accusing it of spreading misinformation about his party and attempting to introduce divisive narratives. He rejected claims that the DMK is anti-Hindu, pointing to temple-related initiatives carried out under his government, including restoration efforts and recovery of temple lands.
He further alleged that the AIADMK has become overly dependent on the BJP, warning voters about what he described as a weakening of independent political decision-making within the party.
Positioning as Defender of Social Harmony
Emphasising his commitment to social harmony, Stalin said his government would continue to stand by minority communities and protect their rights. He presented his leadership as one focused on inclusivity and stability.
Drawing from his earlier political experiences, including opposition during the Emergency period in the 1970s, he said his commitment to safeguarding democratic values has remained unchanged over time.
Appeal to Voters Ahead of Polls
Concluding his message, Stalin urged voters to support his party once again, stressing the importance of maintaining the state’s current trajectory of growth and development. He framed the upcoming election as a decision that would shape Tamil Nadu’s future for the next five years.
