Politics – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday after the Prime Minister urged citizens to reduce unnecessary consumption amid global economic uncertainty and rising import costs.
Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused the government of shifting its responsibilities onto ordinary citizens instead of addressing economic challenges through policy measures. In a strongly worded post on social media platform X, the Congress MP described the Prime Minister’s recent public appeals as evidence of governance failures rather than guidance for national interest.
Opposition Questions Government’s Economic Messaging
The controversy began after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public gathering in Secunderabad on Sunday, where he called for changes in public consumption habits to reduce India’s dependence on imports and conserve foreign exchange reserves.
Responding to those remarks, Rahul Gandhi argued that citizens were being asked to bear the burden of economic stress created during the government’s tenure. He claimed that repeated appeals asking people to limit spending on fuel, edible oil and travel reflected the administration’s inability to manage rising economic pressures effectively.
The Congress leader also renewed his criticism of the Prime Minister’s leadership style, alleging that accountability was increasingly being shifted away from the government. According to Gandhi, the repeated requests directed at citizens indicated that policy solutions were falling short in tackling the country’s financial concerns.
PM Modi Calls for Responsible Consumption
During his address, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of reducing import dependency, especially in sectors where India spends significant foreign exchange. He said lowering edible oil consumption could strengthen both household health and the national economy.
The Prime Minister explained that India imports large quantities of edible oils, which places pressure on foreign currency reserves. He encouraged families to reduce excessive use of cooking oil, describing it as a contribution toward national economic stability.
He also highlighted concerns regarding chemical fertiliser imports. According to PM Modi, India spends heavily on importing fertilisers from overseas markets, and reducing dependence on such products would benefit both farmers and the environment.
Push for Natural Farming and Sustainable Practices
The Prime Minister urged farmers to gradually move toward natural farming methods and reduce the use of chemical fertilisers wherever possible. He said this transition could help preserve soil quality while also cutting import expenses linked to agriculture.
Environmental sustainability was another major focus of the speech. PM Modi stated that responsible farming and controlled consumption patterns could protect natural resources while easing economic pressure created by international market disruptions.
The Prime Minister linked these recommendations to broader global challenges, including supply chain instability and rising costs caused by international conflicts. He suggested that India needed collective participation from citizens to strengthen economic resilience during uncertain times.
Appeal for Reduced Fuel Consumption
Fuel conservation also formed a key part of the Prime Minister’s message. He encouraged citizens to use public transportation systems such as metro rail services whenever possible and advised greater adoption of carpooling practices.
PM Modi further recommended increased use of railway transport for goods movement and wider acceptance of electric vehicles to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel. According to him, such measures would help lower fuel imports while contributing to cleaner urban environments.
He described modern patriotism as extending beyond traditional ideas of national service, saying responsible day-to-day choices by citizens could also strengthen the country during difficult economic conditions.
