Politics – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday travelled to New Delhi along with legislators from his party to meet President Droupadi Murmu, seeking to highlight concerns over the recent defection of seven Rajya Sabha members to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The move comes amid heightened political activity in the state following the unexpected shift in allegiance by key parliamentarians.
Delegation heads to Delhi over defection dispute
The Chief Minister stated that the visit aims to formally present Punjab’s concerns at the highest constitutional level. In a public message, he emphasized that the government remains focused on safeguarding the interests of the state and ensuring that its voice is clearly heard. He described the issue as one affecting democratic accountability and public trust.
According to the developments, seven Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha—Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Swati Maliwal, and Vikramjit Sahney—recently decided to leave the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and align with the BJP. With the exception of Swati Maliwal, the remaining MPs were representing Punjab in the Upper House.
Mann calls defections a breach of public mandate
The Chief Minister has termed the defections as inappropriate and against the spirit of democratic representation. He argued that such actions undermine the mandate given by voters and weaken institutional integrity. The meeting with the President is expected to focus on these concerns and seek attention to what the state leadership considers a serious political issue.
Mann had earlier announced his intention to raise the matter formally, stating that the developments amount to a betrayal of the electorate’s trust. His remarks underline a broader concern within the party regarding political stability and ethical governance.
Confidence motion reinforces government stability
The visit to Delhi follows a recent confidence motion held in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, where the ruling party demonstrated its majority. During a special one-day session, the government secured unanimous support among those present, reinforcing its position amid speculation of instability.
Out of the 117-member Assembly, 88 AAP legislators participated in the session. A few members were unable to attend due to travel, legal, or medical reasons. Despite these absences, the outcome of the vote highlighted the party’s continued strength within the state legislature.
Leadership asserts continued public support
Addressing the Assembly after the vote, Mann stated that attempts to weaken the government through political manoeuvres had not succeeded. He maintained that the people of Punjab continue to support the current administration and that this trust will likely reflect in future electoral outcomes.
The Chief Minister also positioned the AAP as a party resilient to internal and external challenges. He emphasized that the party’s foundation lies in public confidence, which, according to him, remains intact despite recent setbacks.
Concerns raised over institutional misuse
During his address, Mann also expressed concern over the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation. He suggested that such practices could impact democratic processes and constitutional values if not addressed appropriately.
