Politics – Kerala MLA Kadakampally Surendran Rejects Allegations Linked to Temple Gold Case

Politics – CPI(M) leader and Kazhakkoottam MLA Kadakampally Surendran on Thursday strongly denied allegations raised by Unnikrishnan Potti, the main accused in the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple gold theft case. Potti had reportedly submitted a complaint claiming that Surendran was involved in a conspiracy with a woman to file a petition before the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Surendran dismissed the charge and described it as a politically motivated attempt to damage his reputation ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala.

MLA Denies Any Link With Alleged Conspiracy

Speaking to reporters during a press conference, Surendran clarified that he had no knowledge of the woman mentioned in the complaint. According to him, media reports indicated that Potti had written to the Director General of Police accusing the MLA of working with a woman named Pratibha to influence the investigation by filing a complaint with the SIT.

Surendran stated that he had never met or known anyone by that name and that the allegations were baseless. He added that he had never intervened in personal financial matters for anyone through official channels.

The MLA said he only later learned that the woman mentioned in the complaint was reportedly associated with running a school. He reiterated that the accusation linking him to such an individual was completely unfounded.

Claims of Political Motive Ahead of Assembly Elections

Surendran suggested that the complaint may be part of a deliberate effort to target him as the state approaches an important election cycle. Kerala is expected to hold Assembly elections in the first half of the year, with intense competition between major political alliances.

According to Surendran, certain political groups might be attempting to create controversy because of reports suggesting that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has an electoral advantage in the Kazhakkoottam constituency. He also claimed that some surveys had indicated he currently enjoys a strong position in the constituency.

The MLA said he intends to reveal who may be behind the complaint at an appropriate time. However, he did not provide further details during the press briefing.

Response to Media Reports and Allegations

Surendran also expressed concern about how the allegations were reported. He said that some media outlets published the claims without thoroughly verifying the facts.

He explained that when people approach him with financial difficulties, he usually advises them to seek assistance through party members or local support networks. According to him, he does not interfere in such matters through police channels or investigations.

The CPI(M) leader added that spreading unverified allegations could harm public discourse and unfairly damage the reputation of individuals involved in politics.

Confidence in Support From Constituents

Reaffirming his political standing, Surendran said he remains confident about public support in Kazhakkoottam. He stated that despite attempts to tarnish his image, he believes the people of the constituency understand the situation and will not be influenced by such claims.

The MLA also mentioned that the only public figure he personally knows with the name Pratibha is fellow legislator U. Prathibha. He emphasized that the individual referenced in the complaint was someone he had never interacted with.

Surendran concluded that the allegation appeared to be linked directly to electoral politics and suggested that certain individuals were trying to influence public perception before the upcoming polls.

Political Context in Kerala

Kerala’s political landscape is expected to witness intense competition in the coming months. The primary contest is traditionally between the ruling Left Democratic Front and the opposition United Democratic Front. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is also seeking to expand its presence in the state.

As election preparations gather momentum, political leaders across parties have been actively campaigning and addressing issues that may influence voters in key constituencies.
