Politics – Kerala Election Results Highlight Cross-Community Voting Pattern

Politics –  Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has praised Kerala’s voters for choosing candidates beyond religious and community lines during the recently concluded 2026 Assembly elections, describing the state as an example of social unity at a time when identity-based politics is becoming more visible across the country.

Kerala election cross community voting pattern

Tharoor Points to Unique Electoral Choices

Sharing his views on social media, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor referred to the outcome as “One Kerala story” and highlighted how voters in different constituencies elected candidates from communities other than their own majority groups. According to him, these results reflected the state’s long-standing culture of coexistence and tolerance.

He cited examples from three Assembly constituencies. In Thavanur, where Muslim voters form the majority, the electorate chose Christian candidate VS Joy. In Kalamassery, a Hindu-majority constituency, voters elected Muslim candidate VE Abdul Gafoor. Meanwhile, Kochi, which has a significant Christian population, elected Muslim leader Muhammed Shiyas.

Tharoor said these outcomes demonstrated that many people in Kerala continue to prioritize leadership and public service over caste or religion while casting their votes.

UDF Registers Strong Electoral Victory

The comments came shortly after the Congress-led United Democratic Front secured a decisive mandate in the Kerala Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, bringing an end to ten years of governance under the Left Democratic Front.

The Congress party emerged as the largest force within the coalition by securing 63 seats. Its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League, added another 22 seats to the alliance tally, strengthening the UDF’s position in the Assembly.

Political observers view the result as a significant shift in Kerala’s political landscape, especially after the LDF’s decade-long hold on power.

VD Satheesan Holds Victory Roadshow

Following the election outcome, Congress leader VD Satheesan conducted a public roadshow in the Peravur constituency to thank voters and supporters. The procession witnessed participation from a large number of party workers and local residents who gathered to celebrate the victory.

Satheesan won the Peravur seat with 78,658 votes and defeated CPI(M) candidate ET Taison Master by a margin of more than 20,000 votes. His strong performance has increased speculation around the leadership race within the Congress party as discussions over the next Chief Minister continue.

Alongside Satheesan, senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala are also being seen as possible contenders for the top post in the new government.

Congress Leadership Meeting Scheduled

The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee is expected to hold its first meeting of newly elected legislators in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. Senior party observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik are likely to attend the discussions as the leadership prepares to finalize the government formation process.

The meeting is expected to focus heavily on the selection of the next Chief Minister and the allocation of responsibilities within the new administration.

Earlier, KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala also met Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi as consultations continued at the national level regarding the formation of the government in Kerala.
