Politics – Karnataka Congress Leadership Talks Trigger Fresh Speculation in Bengaluru

Politics – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to hold a meeting with party legislators supporting him at the Bengaluru residence of Energy Minister KJ George on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the developments.

Karnataka congress leadership speculation

The meeting comes after a day of intense political discussions in New Delhi involving senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. The leadership consultations have sparked renewed conversations around the future direction of the Congress government in Karnataka, although party leaders publicly denied any immediate plans for a leadership change.

Senior Congress Leaders Hold Multiple Meetings

During Tuesday’s meetings at the party headquarters, Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar were reportedly consulted separately by the Congress high command. After these discussions, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal are understood to have briefed Sonia Gandhi before another private interaction was held with Siddaramaiah.

Sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi discussed the possibility of Siddaramaiah taking up a larger organisational role at the national level. However, no official statement was made confirming such a proposal.

Despite widespread speculation, KC Venugopal strongly denied reports suggesting a leadership transition in Karnataka. Addressing reporters after the meetings, he stated that the discussions focused entirely on upcoming Rajya Sabha and Karnataka Legislative Council elections.

He said the party leadership finalised plans regarding candidates for Rajya Sabha and Council seats not only in Karnataka but also in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Siddaramaiah Rejects Leadership Change Rumours

When asked directly about reports of a possible change in leadership, Siddaramaiah dismissed the claims and called them speculative. He also clarified that there was no discussion regarding a cabinet reshuffle during the meetings in Delhi.

The Congress leadership appears keen on projecting unity ahead of the upcoming elections to the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council. In Karnataka, four Rajya Sabha seats are becoming vacant, and the Congress is expected to comfortably secure three of them due to its numerical strength in the Assembly, while the BJP is likely to win one seat.

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s current Rajya Sabha term is ending in June, and he is widely expected to return to the Upper House from Karnataka.

Candidate Selection Discussions Continue

Party insiders said the Congress may consider several names while finalising candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. Among those reportedly being discussed is former MP DK Suresh, brother of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

The leadership is also said to be considering the inclusion of either a woman candidate or a representative from the Other Backward Classes category to maintain social and regional balance in the nominations.

Discussions were also held regarding Legislative Council elections in Karnataka. Based on the current strength of the Assembly, Congress is likely to win four out of the seven vacant Council seats.

Following the meetings in Delhi, leaders from the Siddaramaiah camp were expected to return to Bengaluru later on Tuesday night.

Focus Shifts to Future Leadership Possibilities

Even as the Congress officially rejected speculation about a change in leadership, internal conversations about the party’s future strategy in Karnataka continue to attract attention.

According to sources, some within the party believe the high command may eventually opt for a broader organisational reset ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. In that context, names of younger leaders with administrative experience and a relatively clean public image are reportedly being discussed.

Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and Industries Minister MB Patil are among the leaders whose names have surfaced during informal discussions. Both are considered experienced administrators and have maintained strong ties with the party organisation.

The name of Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has also reportedly been mentioned. However, party insiders suggest that appointing another Dalit leader while overlooking Mallikarjun Kharge could create political complications for the Congress leadership.

For now, the Congress leadership continues to maintain that the focus remains on organisational planning and upcoming elections rather than any immediate leadership transition in Karnataka.
