Politics – The Trichy South District unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has passed a special resolution requesting party president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to contest from the Trichy East Assembly constituency in the upcoming by-election. The decision was taken during the district executive committee meeting held in Tiruchirappalli on Thursday.

Resolution Passed at District Executive Committee Meeting

The meeting took place at the party’s district office shortly after a state-level executive committee session chaired by Stalin at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai. District Party Council Chairman Govindaraj presided over the gathering in the presence of Trichy South District Secretary and Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.

Party functionaries unanimously supported the resolution urging Stalin to enter the Trichy East bypoll race. The constituency became vacant after TVK leader Vijay, who had secured victories in both Trichy East and Perambur during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, chose to retain the Perambur seat and resign from Trichy East.

The development comes at a politically significant moment for the DMK after Stalin’s recent electoral defeat in the Kolathur Assembly constituency.

Party Discusses Welfare Measures and Election Promises

Apart from the bypoll discussion, the executive committee also adopted several resolutions connected to governance and welfare initiatives. Members urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that women beneficiaries receive their entitlement assistance payments directly in their bank accounts by May 15, responding to public expectations on the issue.

The committee also appreciated voters from the Trichy East, Thiruverumbur and Manapparai constituencies for supporting DMK and alliance candidates during the recent elections.

Another resolution congratulated Udhayanidhi Stalin following his appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Party members praised his role in raising issues linked to government welfare schemes and election commitments inside the Assembly.

These issues included proposals related to increasing the women’s entitlement amount to Rs 2,500, continuation of free bus travel schemes and the supply of six LPG cylinders for eligible families.

Senior Leaders Attend the Gathering

Several prominent leaders and office-bearers attended the meeting. Among them were City Secretary M. Madhivanan, Rajya Sabha MP and poet Salma, along with senior party leaders Vannai Aranganathan, Sekaran and Sabiyulla. District administrators, representatives from local bodies, state wing coordinators and functionaries from town and union-level units were also present during the proceedings.

The gathering reflected the party’s efforts to consolidate support at the grassroots level following the Assembly election setback.

Stalin Accepts Responsibility for Election Defeat

Meanwhile, Stalin addressed party workers and supporters through a video message posted on X, where he openly accepted responsibility for the DMK’s disappointing performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.

In his message, Stalin stated that leadership requires accountability during both victory and defeat. He stressed that no individual within the party should be blamed for the electoral outcome and said the responsibility ultimately rests with him as party president.

The senior leader also announced a new outreach initiative aimed at rebuilding the party structure through direct public engagement and feedback collection. According to party insiders, the programme is expected to focus on reconnecting with voters and reviewing organisational strategies across districts.

Political observers believe the initiative could play an important role in shaping the DMK’s future campaign plans ahead of upcoming electoral contests, including the Trichy East bypoll.
