Politics – The mother of a political candidate in Assam has approached the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that remarks made during an election campaign led to misinformation and subsequent online harassment.
Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, whose daughter Kunki Chowdhury is contesting from the Guwahati Central constituency as a candidate of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, has formally written to the NCW seeking intervention. In her letter, she stated that she is not an active participant in politics and was brought into the spotlight only due to her daughter’s involvement in the ongoing electoral process.
Allegations Raised Over Campaign Statements
In her complaint, Sujata accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of making statements during campaign events that she described as inaccurate and harmful. According to her, the remarks suggested that her social media activity had offended certain religious sentiments and implied associations with views considered anti-national.
She firmly rejected these claims, calling them untrue and deliberately misleading. Sujata maintained that such statements appeared aimed at damaging her personal reputation while indirectly affecting her daughter’s political campaign.
Clarification on Viral Photograph
A major point of contention revolves around a photograph that was reportedly shown to journalists, allegedly depicting Sujata consuming beef. Addressing this, she clarified that the image was taken during a visit to The International Church of Cannabis in Denver, Colorado, in the United States.
She explained that the object seen in the image was not food but an artistic installation used as a prop for visitors. According to her, the item resembled a conical object and was intended purely for photography purposes. She emphasized that presenting the image as evidence of her consuming beef was factually incorrect and misrepresented the context.
Supporting her claim, a statement from Elevation Ministries, Inc. reportedly confirmed that the object in question was a pillow designed for display and visitor interaction, not any edible item.
Concerns Over Online Harassment
Following the circulation of these allegations, Sujata reported facing significant online harassment. She stated that her personal photographs, including images featuring her minor son, were widely shared on social media platforms without her consent.
