Politics – A series of recent developments has placed veteran BJP leader Mahesh Kewat in the spotlight, while debates over population control and the state’s growing contribution to vegetable production have also drawn attention across Madhya Pradesh.
Mahesh Kewat’s Political Journey Gains Momentum
After spending more than four decades associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and over three decades within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mahesh Kewat has witnessed a remarkable rise in his political career. Hailing from the Kewat community in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, he has secured two major achievements within a short span.
In late April, Kewat was entrusted with the leadership of the Madhya Pradesh Fishermen Welfare Board. Less than two months later, he emerged as the unexpected BJP candidate to win the state’s third Rajya Sabha seat during the election held on June 11.
His recent elevation has sparked discussions within political circles in Bhopal. With speculation surrounding a possible expansion of the Union Council of Ministers in the coming months, several political observers believe Kewat could be considered for a ministerial position at the Centre. While no official indication has been given, his rapid rise has generated considerable interest among party workers and analysts alike.
Former Bureaucrat’s Population Control Remarks Trigger Discussion
Former IAS officer Niyaz Khan has once again found himself at the center of public debate due to his outspoken views. Known for expressing opinions that often attract attention, Khan recently commented on population growth in India through a post on social media platform X.
In his statement, Khan argued that the country’s rising population poses serious challenges and suggested that authorities should consider stricter measures to address the issue. He advocated sterilisation as a population control mechanism and stated that either individuals should voluntarily adopt such measures or the government should enforce them.
The former bureaucrat also specifically referred to larger family sizes among certain communities and called for strict implementation of population control policies. His comments have generated reactions online, with supporters and critics engaging in discussions over the practicality, legality, and ethical implications of such proposals.
Madhya Pradesh Strengthens Position in Vegetable Production
Madhya Pradesh continues to strengthen its role in India’s agricultural sector, particularly in vegetable cultivation. According to official figures, the state currently ranks third in the country for vegetable production and has recorded substantial growth over the past four years.
The increase in production has been estimated at 21.58 lakh metric tonnes during this period. Annual vegetable output in the state has now reached nearly 259 lakh metric tonnes, making Madhya Pradesh an important contributor to India’s overall vegetable production, which stands at approximately 217.7 million metric tonnes.
Expansion Plan Targets Larger Cultivation Area
To further boost output, the Department of Horticulture and Food Processing has prepared an extensive development strategy aimed at expanding vegetable farming across the state.
The initiative seeks to bring around 54,000 additional hectares under vegetable cultivation. A significant portion of this expansion plan includes potato farming, with nearly 13,300 hectares earmarked specifically for potato cultivation.
Officials believe the move will help improve agricultural productivity, strengthen farmer incomes, and support the growing demand for vegetables across domestic markets. The expansion is also expected to contribute to the state’s broader agricultural development goals in the years ahead.
