Politics – A day before the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral election, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gathered in the capital to fine-tune their approach for the upcoming vote scheduled on April 29.
Senior BJP parliamentarians from Delhi, along with recently inducted party member Swati Maliwal, held a meeting with the party’s Delhi unit chief, Virendra Sachdeva. The discussion focused on aligning strategy and ensuring coordination among party representatives ahead of what is seen as a significant civic contest.
Key Positions Up for Election
The election on Wednesday will determine not only the new mayor but also the deputy mayor and three vacant positions in the standing committee. These roles are considered important for decision-making within the MCD, particularly in matters related to governance, finances, and policy implementation at the municipal level.
The electoral college for this vote includes a total of 273 members. This group is made up of 249 elected councillors, 14 members of the legislative assembly nominated by the Delhi Assembly, seven members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha, and three representatives from the Rajya Sabha. To secure victory, a candidate must obtain at least 137 votes.
BJP’s Candidate and Political Position
The BJP has nominated Pravesh Wahi as its candidate for the mayoral post. Wahi, who represents Rohini-East, brings experience as a three-time councillor. Party insiders suggest that his administrative familiarity and long-standing involvement in local governance played a key role in his selection.
With the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) choosing not to participate in the contest, the political dynamics have shifted considerably. The Congress has fielded Haji Zarif as its candidate, but given the current numbers and the absence of AAP in the race, the BJP appears to be in a comfortable position heading into the election.

AAP’s decision to stay out of the mayoral election has reduced the level of competition. In previous contests, the party had been a strong contender, often leading to closely fought outcomes. This time, however, its absence has simplified the equation for other participants.
