Politics – BJP Government Begins Governance Overhaul in West Bengal
Politics – The newly formed BJP government in West Bengal has started outlining its administrative priorities after assuming power in the state, with senior leaders promising action on pending corruption cases and reforms across multiple departments.

Minister Signals Fresh Action on Corruption Cases
West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday stated that investigations linked to alleged corruption involving leaders from the previous administration would be reopened. He claimed that several cases had remained inactive earlier due to a lack of administrative approval and said authorities would now move ahead with inquiries.
According to Ghosh, the government intends to review all pending allegations through proper legal and investigative channels. He also said that the administration plans to respond to public expectations regarding accountability and governance.
BJP Government Focuses on Administrative Rebuilding
The remarks came shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party formed its first government in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking earlier after the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, Ghosh described the situation inherited by the new administration as a significant governance challenge.
He said the government’s immediate focus would be restoring public confidence, strengthening law and order, and improving administrative functioning across the state. Ghosh added that rebuilding institutions and governance systems would take time, though the cabinet had already begun work on priority areas.
The BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections marked a major political development in West Bengal, ending years of Trinamool Congress rule in the state.
Suvendu Adhikari Takes Charge as Chief Minister
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the state’s first BJP Chief Minister, leading the newly formed cabinet in Kolkata. The transition has been viewed as a major shift in the political landscape of West Bengal, with the party securing a decisive electoral mandate.
Several BJP leaders also joined the cabinet during the swearing-in ceremony. Among them were Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik, all of whom were assigned key ministerial responsibilities in the new government.
The leadership has indicated that administrative restructuring and departmental coordination will remain central to its early agenda.
Key Departments Assigned to Cabinet Ministers
On Monday, Chief Minister Adhikari completed the allocation of major portfolios among cabinet ministers during a meeting with party legislators. The move came soon after the government was formed, reflecting an effort to establish operational control across departments without delay.
Under the portfolio distribution, Dilip Ghosh has been given responsibility for the Rural Development, Panchayats and Animal Resources departments. Ashok Kirtania will oversee the Food Department, while Kshudiram Tudu has been assigned the Backwards Class Welfare Department.
Agnimitra Paul has taken charge of the Women and Child Welfare Department. Nisith Pramanik will manage North Bengal Development along with Sports and Youth Welfare responsibilities.
Government Signals Fast Administrative Decisions
The swift allocation of portfolios is being seen as one of the first major administrative steps of the BJP-led government. Officials and party leaders have indicated that the cabinet intends to begin departmental reviews and policy planning immediately.
Political observers believe the coming weeks will be important for the new administration as it attempts to implement governance reforms, establish its policy direction, and respond to the expectations that followed its electoral victory.
The government has also emphasized that strengthening administrative transparency and improving public services will remain among its primary objectives during the initial phase of its tenure.
