Politics – Assam NDA Government Begins Third Straight Term Under Himanta Sarma
Politics – The National Democratic Alliance returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term on Tuesday as Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the chief minister once again during a large ceremony held in Guwahati.

Grand Ceremony Held in Guwahati
The oath-taking event took place at the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Sarma along with four ministers from the NDA alliance. The newly sworn-in ministers included BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, Asom Gana Parishad president Atul Bora, and Bodoland People’s Front representative Charan Boro.
The ceremony drew several high-profile leaders from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the senior leaders present on the occasion. Chief ministers from multiple NDA-governed states and Union Territories also attended the programme along with diplomats, business leaders and religious figures.
Family members of Himanta Biswa Sarma, including his mother, were also seen at the swearing-in event.
Sarma Speaks About Assam’s Development
Before taking oath, Sarma shared a message on social media expressing hope for Assam’s future. Referring to the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, he said the state would continue moving toward peace, prosperity and progress in the coming years.
The BJP leader also signalled that the new government would continue focusing on issues related to land protection and regional identity. In a message posted a day earlier, Sarma stated that the government remained committed to safeguarding Assam’s land and cultural identity. He mentioned that large areas of land had already been cleared from encroachment and said further action would continue under the NDA government’s next phase.
NDA Registers Strong Electoral Victory
The NDA secured a commanding majority in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections. Out of the 126 seats in the Assembly, the alliance won 102 constituencies, giving it one of its strongest performances in the state.
The BJP emerged as the largest party with victories in 82 seats. Its alliance partners, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, won 10 seats each, strengthening the coalition’s position in the state legislature.
Political observers see the result as another major milestone for the NDA in the Northeast region. The alliance first came to power in Assam in 2016 under the leadership of former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, marking the BJP’s rise in the state.
Focus on Identity and Infrastructure
During the election campaign, the BJP strongly highlighted issues linked to Assamese identity, land rights and development projects. The party also promoted its governance record, infrastructure expansion and welfare initiatives across the state.
Several NDA leaders who attended the ceremony described the election outcome as a strong endorsement of the alliance’s development agenda. They also credited the central government for increasing attention toward the Northeast region over the past decade.
Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad, said the alliance’s third consecutive term could become an important period for Assam’s future growth. Leaders from different NDA-ruled states echoed similar views and thanked voters for supporting the coalition once again.
The new government is expected to continue work on infrastructure, connectivity, investment and social welfare programmes while maintaining its focus on regional identity and land-related issues.
