Alleged Comment During Election Campaign

The incident reportedly took place during a campaign rally for the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll scheduled for November 11. Raja Warring, who is also a Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, allegedly commented on the skin tone of the late leader while addressing the public in support of the party’s candidate.

Raja Warring Issues Clarification

Following backlash, Raja Warring responded by saying that Buta Singh was like a fatherly figure to him and that he never intended to disrespect him or any community. He added that his statement was meant to reflect the inclusive nature of the Congress party, not to demean anyone.

Apology After Public Reaction

Reports stated that the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission took suo motu notice of the matter and issued summons to Warring. In response, he expressed regret and said, “If anyone has felt hurt, I offer my unconditional apology.” He further clarified that his remarks were made in a positive tone, and he continued to hold Buta Singh in high regard.

Commission Seeks Action Report

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes also intervened by issuing a notice to the Tarn Taran Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police. Acting on a media report quoting BJP national General Secretary Tarun Chugh, the commission has demanded an action taken report within seven days of receiving the notice.

Case Linked to Election Environment

The timing of the incident, just ahead of the bypoll, has added political heat in Punjab. The issue is being widely discussed across political and social platforms, raising concerns over responsible political conduct during campaigns.
