Parliament – The Lok Sabha witnessed heated exchanges on Tuesday after Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made controversial remarks about newly appointed Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi during a discussion on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The comments triggered strong objections from the Treasury benches, were later removed from the official parliamentary record, and led to demands from the ruling side that the Congress leader issue an apology.
Dispute Erupts During Bill Discussion
The confrontation unfolded while Priyanka Gandhi was participating in the debate on the proposed legislation aimed at preventing unfair practices in public examinations. Following her comments, Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress MP of making personal allegations that went beyond the scope of parliamentary discussion.
Responding in the House, Joshi rejected the claims made against him and argued that such statements should be backed by credible evidence. He urged that action be taken against what he described as misleading allegations and said lawmakers should not be allowed to make unsupported accusations. Joshi also called for an apology from Priyanka Gandhi and demanded strict action over the remarks.
Priyanka Gandhi Defends Her Statements
Priyanka Gandhi maintained that her comments were based on information published in a newspaper report. She further claimed that her party also possessed video material related to the issue. As tensions escalated inside the House, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to members from both sides to maintain order and continue proceedings peacefully.
Later in the day, Pralhad Joshi met Speaker Om Birla and Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the controversy surrounding the debate.
Rahul Gandhi Backs Congress MP
Outside Parliament, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi defended Priyanka Gandhi and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the appointment of Pralhad Joshi as the country’s Education Minister.
Rahul Gandhi questioned the government’s decision, alleging that the appointment sent an inappropriate message at a time when students and young people had been raising concerns over issues affecting the education system. He also made sharp remarks against Joshi, accusing him of taking positions that, according to the Congress leader, were inconsistent with the values expected from someone holding such an important portfolio.
He further argued that the Prime Minister had several other senior leaders available for the post and expressed surprise over the choice made for the Education Ministry.
Criticism Over Former Minister’s Farewell
During her speech in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka Gandhi also criticised BJP members for welcoming former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after his resignation. She remarked that the reception given to him inside the Parliament complex resembled the arrival of a celebrity rather than a minister leaving office after facing criticism.
The Congress MP linked her criticism to concerns over examination paper leak cases and referred to the reported suicide of a student in Maharashtra, saying the incident reflected the emotional impact such controversies have had on young people and their families. According to her, celebrating political figures under such circumstances projected an insensitive message.
Congress Raises Broader Concerns
Expanding her criticism beyond the education issue, Priyanka Gandhi also referred to allegations regarding missing donations linked to the Ram temple. She argued that the most significant loss was not financial but the damage caused to the aspirations of students affected by repeated examination controversies.
She said the future of India’s youth should remain a national priority and warned that growing disappointment among students could weaken the country’s progress. Reaffirming the Congress party’s position, she stated that her party would continue raising issues concerning students and young citizens inside and outside Parliament.
The debate over the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill ultimately became overshadowed by the political confrontation, highlighting the sharp differences between the ruling National Democratic Alliance and the Opposition during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
