Parliament – Congress Finalises Strategy Ahead of Crucial Monsoon Session
Parliament – Senior Congress leaders gathered in New Delhi on Thursday to prepare the party’s approach for the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, which is scheduled to commence on July 20. The strategy discussion took place at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath. The meeting was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and several senior party figures. Leaders reviewed the parliamentary agenda and discussed the subjects that the opposition intends to highlight during the weeks ahead.
The Monsoon session is expected to run from July 20 until August 13, providing both the government and opposition with an opportunity to debate a range of legislative and public policy matters.
Prominent Congress Leaders Attend
Several experienced leaders participated in the meeting, reflecting the importance the party has attached to the upcoming session. Among those present were AICC General Secretary K. C. Venugopal, Rajya Sabha Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh, former Union Minister P. Chidambaram, K. Suresh, Naseer Hussain, Manickam Tagore, Kumari Selja, Tariq Anwar, Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, along with other senior members of the organisation.
The discussions were aimed at ensuring coordination among party representatives in both Houses of Parliament so that the Congress can present a unified stand on issues expected to dominate the session.
INDIA Bloc to Coordinate Joint Position
In addition to the Congress meeting, the opposition’s INDIA alliance is scheduled to hold a separate strategy session on Monday. Leaders from constituent parties are expected to work on a common parliamentary plan and identify issues on which they will jointly challenge the government during the Monsoon session.
The alliance is expected to coordinate its interventions to ensure that concerns shared by multiple opposition parties receive collective attention inside Parliament.
Government Preparing Legislative Agenda
Ahead of the beginning of the session, the central government will hold an all-party meeting on Sunday. Representatives from different political parties are expected to discuss the proposed business for the session and exchange views on legislative priorities.
Among the important measures likely to be introduced are a Constitution Amendment Bill related to delimitation and an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats. Another proposed legislation is expected to address provisions concerning the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Union Ministers if they are jailed under specified circumstances.
Opposition Plans to Raise Key Public Issues
The Congress and its allies are also preparing to question the government on several matters that have attracted national attention. The alleged irregularities in the NEET examination paper leak case are expected to remain one of the major issues raised by the opposition.
In addition, opposition parties are likely to seek discussions over allegations regarding the handling of donation funds linked to the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Economic concerns, including rising fuel prices, are also expected to feature prominently in parliamentary debates. The proposed India-United States trade agreement is another subject that opposition leaders are preparing to examine during the session.
With both the government and opposition completing their preparations, the Monsoon session is expected to witness extensive discussions on legislation, governance, education, the economy and other significant national issues over the coming weeks
