OrganDonation – Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has paid tribute to Aalin Sherin Abraham, a 10-month-old girl from Kerala whose organs were donated after she was declared brain dead, describing her brief life as a lasting gift to humanity. He said the infant’s legacy would inspire greater awareness about organ donation and strengthen efforts to save lives across the country.
A Tragic Loss Turns Into Hope
Aalin Sherin was critically injured in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam in Kottayam district while travelling with her mother and maternal grandparents. Despite several days of intensive medical care, doctors confirmed her brain death on February 12.
Faced with an unimaginable loss, her parents, Sherin N John and Arun Abraham, chose to donate their child’s organs so that other families might be spared similar grief. Their decision allowed multiple patients to receive life-saving transplants.
Reacting to the development, Soren said that losing a child is one of the most painful experiences any parent can endure. He noted that choosing organ donation at such a moment reflects extraordinary courage and compassion. According to him, the couple’s action was not merely a medical decision but a powerful affirmation of faith in humanity.
He added that although Aalin’s life was short, she now lives on through the lives she has helped save, calling her sacrifice an enduring symbol of hope.
Coordination and Medical Efforts
The organ retrieval and allocation process was coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), ensuring that the procedures followed established medical and legal protocols.
Aalin’s heart valve was transported to the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram. Her liver was allocated to KIMS Hospital in the same city, while her kidneys were transplanted at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Her eyes were also donated to an eye bank, offering the possibility of restored vision to recipients.
Medical officials involved in the process followed standard guidelines for organ transplantation, highlighting the efficiency of Kerala’s organ donation network.
Recognition From State Leaders
Soren also acknowledged the gesture made by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who ensured that the child’s last rites were conducted with state honours. He described the move as a mark of respect for the family’s decision and a recognition of the significance of organ donation.
In his remarks, Soren emphasized that organ donation represents one of the most meaningful ways to give life to others. He said the example set by Aalin’s parents goes beyond regional or linguistic boundaries and sends a universal message about empathy and social responsibility.
Strengthening Organ Donation Policy
The Jharkhand Chief Minister stated that his government would take concrete steps to further strengthen the state’s organ donation framework. He said policies would be reviewed and improved to encourage greater participation in organ and tissue donation, ensuring that more patients awaiting transplants receive timely help.
Health experts have long stressed that increased public awareness and transparent systems are key to improving organ donation rates. Soren’s remarks signal that the state may focus on public education campaigns and policy refinement to support life-saving initiatives.
