Authorities Increase Vigilance After Border Incident Involving Nihang Sikh Group

A tense situation unfolded in Uttarakhand after a group of Nihang Sikhs reportedly entered the state by crossing police barricades at the Kulhal check post along the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border late on Thursday night. The development came in the wake of a recent disagreement involving members of the group and local residents in Karnaprayag, located in Chamoli district.

Border Checkpoint Witnesses Prolonged Standoff

Officials said nearly 200 Nihang Sikhs travelling from Chandigarh towards Uttarakhand through Himachal Pradesh were stopped by police and district authorities at the Kulhal checkpoint. Barricades had been installed earlier as part of precautionary measures to restrict their entry. Senior administrative officers, police officials, and representatives of the group held discussions for almost two hours at Paonta Sahib Gurdwara in an effort to reach a peaceful solution. However, the talks concluded without an agreement.

Small Group Continues Towards Uttarakhand

Following the unsuccessful discussions, a section of the travellers reportedly agreed to return. However, around 20 to 30 members moved across the Kulhal bridge and reached the security checkpoint, where they encountered another police blockade. The situation remained at a standstill for several hours before the group allegedly forced its way through the barricades and continued along the Dehradun-Paonta highway.

Heavy Security Deployed Across Key Routes

Authorities stated that some individuals in the group were carrying and displaying traditional swords while proceeding towards the Dharmwala area. In response, additional police personnel, along with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) units, were deployed at sensitive locations to maintain law and order. Security forces remained on alert throughout the route to prevent any untoward incident.

Administration Tightens Security in Dehradun

As information about the group’s movement spread, police reinforcements from different parts of Dehradun district were mobilised to strengthen security arrangements. Officials confirmed that the Nihang Sikhs maintained their intention to continue their journey towards Hemkund Sahib despite restrictions imposed by the administration.

Late on Thursday night, fresh barricades were installed at Prem Nagar Chowk to prevent the group from entering Dehradun city. District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan and Senior Superintendent of Police Parmendra Dobal personally visited the location to review the preparedness of security personnel and oversee the arrangements on the ground.

Intelligence Agencies Monitor Movement

By approximately 1 a.m. on Friday, the group had not reached the Prem Nagar area, and officials had not confirmed its exact location. Intelligence agencies were tasked with tracking the movement of the travellers and identifying the route they had taken after crossing the border checkpoint. Authorities continued monitoring the situation while coordinating with security agencies to ensure public safety.

Background to the Incident

The heightened security measures follow recent tensions in Karnaprayag, where a dispute involving Nihang Sikhs and local residents prompted the administration to increase surveillance across several parts of Uttarakhand. Officials remain vigilant as they work to maintain peace and prevent any escalation while ensuring that law and order are preserved throughout the affected regions.
