NEET Protest – Congress Demands Education Minister’s Statement as Exam Leak Row Deepens
NEET Protest – The political debate surrounding alleged examination paper leaks gathered fresh momentum on Wednesday as the Congress renewed its demand for a detailed explanation from the Union government. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal submitted an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on examination irregularities and urging Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to make a suo motu statement before Parliament.
Congress Seeks Minister’s Accountability
KC Venugopal, who also serves as the Congress General Secretary, argued that the repeated controversies involving competitive examinations had created widespread anxiety among students and their families. He maintained that the Education Minister should accept both moral and constitutional responsibility for the developments and step down from office.
According to Venugopal, Parliament should hold an extensive discussion not only on the alleged NEET and CBSE examination irregularities but also on the larger concerns affecting the country’s education system. He further called for the withdrawal of legal cases registered against students and young people who participated in peaceful demonstrations demanding a fair and transparent examination process.
Questions Raised Over Investigation Progress
The Congress leader also questioned the pace of investigations into the alleged paper leak incidents. He claimed that despite the seriousness of the allegations, authorities had not taken sufficient action against those believed to be responsible.
Venugopal alleged that no substantial criminal proceedings had been initiated against individuals allegedly linked to the paper leak network, including coaching operators, officials, or other suspected participants. He argued that such delays have weakened public confidence in the examination system and raised concerns about accountability within the administration.
Demand for Parliamentary Discussion
Emphasising the need for transparency, Venugopal said the issue deserved immediate attention in Parliament because it directly affected the future of lakhs of students across the country. He maintained that allowing the Education Minister to continue without fixing responsibility went against the established principle of ministerial accountability in a parliamentary democracy.
The Congress has consistently pressed the government to clarify its position on examination-related controversies, stating that students deserve confidence in the integrity of recruitment and entrance examinations conducted across the country.
Student Protests May Intensify
Meanwhile, demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak continued to receive political backing from various opposition groups. CJP National Spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka warned that public protests could expand if the Centre failed to address the concerns raised by students.
Ranka said the demonstrations witnessed on July 20 should not be viewed as isolated events. According to him, they represented only the beginning of a broader movement demanding greater accountability in the conduct of national examinations. He claimed that a significantly larger number of students and supporters could participate in future protests if the government did not respond to their demands.
Focus Remains on Examination Reforms
The controversy has kept examination reforms at the centre of political debate, with opposition parties insisting on stronger safeguards to prevent future irregularities. They have also called for greater transparency in investigations and faster action against anyone found responsible for compromising the credibility of public examinations.
As Parliament continues its proceedings, the issue is expected to remain a key point of discussion, with opposition parties pressing the government for answers while student groups continue to seek assurances that future examinations will be conducted fairly and securely.
