Municipality – Ongole Marks 150 Years With Heritage Tower Unveiling

Municipality – Ongole Municipality has stepped into its 150th year, marking the occasion with a formal launch of celebrations at Church Junction near the Collectorate, drawing participation from local leaders and residents.

Historic milestone celebrated with ceremonial launch

The anniversary event brought together key public representatives, including District Collector P Rajababu, Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhan Rao, and Santhanuthalapadu MLA BN Vijay Kumar. The gathering witnessed the unveiling of a striking 25-foot Ashoka Dharma Chakra tower carved from a single stone, symbolising the city’s long civic journey. Commemorative posters were also released to officially kick off the year-long observance.

Legacy of one of the state’s oldest municipalities

Founded on September 30, 1876, Ongole stands among the earliest municipalities in the region, with a history spanning a century and a half. Speaking at the event, the District Collector underlined the town’s historical importance while pointing to its evolving role in the state’s development landscape. He noted that Ongole continues to grow with opportunities emerging from infrastructure and industrial projects.

Growth driven by infrastructure and industry

Officials highlighted several key projects expected to shape Ongole’s future. Developments such as Ramayapatnam Port, investments by BPCL, and expansion of industrial activity including Indosol enterprises were cited as indicators of economic progress. The city’s granite trade and tourism potential were also mentioned as important contributors to its growth. To commemorate the milestone, authorities have planned a series of cultural programmes spanning 150 days, aimed at engaging the public and showcasing local traditions.

Memorial installation to inspire younger generations

MLA Damacharla Janardhan Rao shared details about the Ashoka Dharma Chakra structure, describing it as a project costing Rs 82 lakh and completed within eight months. According to him, the installation is not only a tribute to Ongole’s past but also an educational symbol for younger residents. He stressed the importance of preserving historical awareness while moving forward with modern development initiatives.

Focus on civic development and infrastructure upgrades

The MLA also outlined ongoing and planned civic improvements in the region. These include expansion of key roads, construction of housing facilities, canal development works, and upgrades to the water supply network. Additionally, proposals for new sports infrastructure, such as a cricket stadium and indoor sports complexes, are under consideration to support community activities and youth engagement.

Emphasis on heritage awareness among youth

Santhanuthalapadu MLA BN Vijay Kumar welcomed the initiative and emphasised the need to connect younger generations with the city’s rich legacy. He pointed out that commemorative efforts like the anniversary celebrations and the newly unveiled monument can play a meaningful role in strengthening civic pride and awareness.

The planned 150-day programme is expected to feature a range of cultural events, public activities, and community engagements. Officials believe these initiatives will not only celebrate Ongole’s past but also encourage broader participation in shaping its future. The milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on the municipality’s journey while reinforcing its identity as a growing urban centre with deep historical roots.
