Mumbai: In Mulund, police file a formal complaint against 367 individuals for obtaining unauthorized birth certificates

Mumbai: According to authorities, a formal complaint has been filed against 367 people for allegedly obtaining birth certificates illegally, as reported by ANI. Following the filing of a comprehensive complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, which named four important suspects in addition to hundreds of others, the case was lodged at Mumbai’s Mulund Police Station. Police suspect the defendants of using false means to obtain legitimate birth certificates. The legal foundation for the inquiry is provided by Sections 23 of the Birth Registration Act and Sections 336(3), 340(2), 318(4), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which are included in the FIR.

According to ANI, a large number of the accused are thought to be immigrants from Bangladesh who falsified paperwork to get Indian birth certificates. Concerns over this matter have been voiced repeatedly by Kirit Somaiya, who highlights what he calls an expanding network of foreign nationals trying to use fake documents to regularize their presence. Prior to this, the BJP leader praised Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the police’s string of arrests of Bangladeshi nationals connected to these fraudulent schemes. Somaiya has consistently called for decisive action against document fabrication and cross-border infiltration.

According to ANI, Somaiya said earlier this year that he was certain that what he called a “racket” will soon be completely disclosed. He said that Maharashtra Police, ATS units, and district administrations had been directed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to step up their efforts against Bangladeshi Rohingya Muslims who were allegedly living in the state illegally. “I feel that this entire network will be busted in the coming days,” Somaiya said, adding that additional examples of this kind will be discovered as a result of continuing efforts. Similar levels of scrutiny have been maintained by authorities in Mumbai and other areas.

According to ANI, Devendra Fadnavis said that the state has already taken action against illegal Bangladeshi residents living in Maharashtra and that they will be deported when proper procedure was finished. When 43 Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators were detained by Jalgaon Police in November on suspicion of fabricating court orders to get birth certificates, Somaiya brought attention to a significant development. A more complex and well-organized operation is being investigated in this case, which is recorded as 129/2025 and includes claims of document theft and improper use of court seals from the Executive Magistrate’s office.
