MonsoonPreparedness – Delhi Authorities Accelerate Drain Cleaning Ahead of Rains

MonsoonPreparedness – As Delhi prepares for the arrival of the monsoon, authorities have intensified efforts to improve the city’s drainage infrastructure and reduce the chances of waterlogging. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to ensure that desilting work in all drains under its control is completed by June 15. Officials informed him that a substantial portion of the project has already been finished.

Focus on Monsoon Readiness

The Lieutenant Governor has been closely reviewing the progress of drain-cleaning operations across different parts of the capital. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the city’s preparedness for heavy rainfall and preventing disruptions caused by flooded roads and clogged drainage channels during the rainy season.

According to information shared by the DDA, cleaning operations have covered extensive stretches of storm-water drains. Around 69 kilometres of drains have been cleared in Narela, while nearly 192 kilometres have been cleaned in Dwarka. The process includes removing accumulated silt, waste material, unwanted vegetation, and other blockages that can restrict the smooth movement of rainwater.

Significant Progress Reported by DDA

Officials stated that approximately 70 percent of the desilting target has already been achieved. The agency said the work is being carried out on a priority basis to ensure timely completion before the monsoon reaches the national capital.

The DDA also highlighted that regular field inspections are being conducted by senior officials to maintain quality standards and monitor progress. The primary objective is to ensure effective drainage, reduce flooding risks, ease traffic movement during rainfall, and maintain cleanliness in public spaces.

Municipal Corporation Records Strong Advancement

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has also reported encouraging progress in its desilting campaign. Recently, the civic body announced that nearly 80 percent of the first phase of drain cleaning had been completed, even though the official deadline of June 30 is still several weeks away.

Data released by the corporation showed that more than 112,000 metric tonnes of silt had been removed from 793 major drains by May 19. This achievement represents nearly four-fifths of the total Phase-I target of over 141,000 metric tonnes. Officials believe the early progress will help improve drainage efficiency once monsoon showers begin.

Flood Control Department Continues Operations

The city’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department has also been carrying out large-scale desilting work as part of a broader strategy to tackle urban flooding. Earlier updates released in April indicated steady advancement across major drainage channels maintained by the department.

Official figures available up to the third week of April revealed that cleaning work in 76 major drains had crossed the 57 percent mark. More than 1.648 million cubic metres of silt had been extracted against a planned target of 2.85 million cubic metres.

Coordinated Effort Across Agencies

Authorities view the ongoing desilting operations as a crucial component of Delhi’s annual monsoon preparedness plan. With multiple departments working simultaneously, officials hope to minimise water accumulation on roads, reduce traffic disruptions, and strengthen the city’s ability to handle intense rainfall events.

As the monsoon season approaches, civic agencies are expected to continue inspections and monitoring to ensure that all remaining work is completed within the stipulated timelines and that drainage networks remain fully functional across the capital.
