Monsoon – Kerala Braces for Heavy Rain as IMD Issues Weather Alert
Monsoon – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala as rainfall activity is expected to intensify in different parts of the state over the next few days. The advisory highlights the possibility of heavy showers in selected regions while weather systems continue to strengthen ahead of the monsoon’s further advance.

Rain Alert Issued for Nine Kerala Districts
According to the latest forecast from the weather department, the yellow alert covers Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious as periods of intense rainfall may occur, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
Meteorologists indicated that the current weather pattern could bring localized heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to different parts of the state. Some regions may also continue to experience warm and humid conditions despite the increase in rainfall activity.
Monsoon Conditions Continue to Improve
The IMD stated that conditions remain favorable for the southwest monsoon to progress further over Kerala and neighboring regions. The northern boundary of the monsoon currently extends from the Arabian Sea toward the Bay of Bengal, creating an environment supportive of its gradual expansion.
Weather experts expect the monsoon to advance into additional parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal during the coming days. The seasonal shift is likely to bring widespread rainfall to several southern states.
Thunderstorms Expected Across Southern States
Apart from Kerala, several regions in South India are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu may experience wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour.
The weather department also noted that isolated locations in Kerala and Lakshadweep could receive significant rainfall. Meanwhile, parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh may face stronger weather conditions, including thundersqualls capable of producing wind gusts reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour.
Northeast and Eastern India to Receive Continued Rainfall
Rain-bearing systems are also expected to remain active across Northeast India throughout the week. Light to moderate rainfall is forecast in many areas, while isolated heavy showers may occur in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
In eastern India, states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha are likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Similar weather activity is anticipated in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of isolated thundersqualls in parts of Odisha and Jharkhand.
Safety Measures Recommended by IMD
The IMD has urged people to take necessary precautions during adverse weather conditions. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid flooded locations and remain alert to weather updates issued by local authorities.
Farmers have also been encouraged to safeguard standing crops from excessive rainfall and possible hail events. Livestock owners are advised to ensure animals have adequate shelter and access to water during periods of severe weather.
Vigilance Advised as Monsoon Expands
As the southwest monsoon gradually spreads across larger parts of the country, officials are emphasizing preparedness and awareness. Authorities continue to encourage citizens to follow safety guidelines and remain informed about changing weather conditions to minimize risks associated with heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms.
