MCD – Delhi Civic Body Sets July 15 Polls for Six Committee Seats

MCD – The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will hold elections on July 15 to fill six vacant positions in its Standing Committee. The vacancies arose after members representing different ward committees retired under the rotational system provided in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.

Vacancies across six ward committees

The municipal secretary’s office said that one representative will be chosen from each of the six concerned ward committees. The seats are linked to Keshav Puram, Narela, Najafgarh, Central, Shahdara South and Karol Bagh ward committees.

The election process is being conducted to restore full representation in the Standing Committee after the scheduled retirement of the existing members. Under the civic body’s rules, councillors who have completed their term in the committee may contest again if they remain eligible.

Retiring members named in notification

The members retiring from the Standing Committee include Shikha Bhardwaj from Ward No. 58, Anju Devi from Ward No. 29, Inderjeet Sehrawat from Ward No. 133, Rajpal Singh from Ward No. 174, Neemaa Bhagat from Ward No. 210 and Ankush Narang from Ward No. 87.

Officials said the notification clearly allows the outgoing committee members to seek re-election. Their participation, however, will depend on nominations and the voting process within their respective ward committees.

Voting arrangements at Civic Centre

The elections are scheduled to take place at the Hansraj Gupta Auditorium and the Satya Narayan Bansal Sabhagar at the Civic Centre. Separate time slots have been assigned for each ward committee to ensure that the voting process is conducted in an orderly manner.

The MCD has not indicated any change in the broader procedure for the election. Ward committee members will vote to elect one representative each for the six available seats in the Standing Committee.

Importance of the Standing Committee

The Standing Committee is among the key decision-making bodies of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. It plays an important role in reviewing civic proposals, administrative matters, expenditure-related decisions and development works placed before the municipal body.

With the upcoming election, the corporation is expected to complete the process of replacing members who retired by rotation. The newly elected representatives will join the committee after the results are declared in accordance with the civic body’s procedures.

Ward committee leadership polls also announced

Along with the Standing Committee elections, the MCD has also announced elections for the posts of chairman and deputy chairman in all ward committees. These positions are important for coordinating local civic matters and conducting committee meetings in their respective areas.

The July 15 exercise will therefore include both the selection of six Standing Committee members and the election of ward committee leadership. Further details regarding nominations, voting schedules and results are expected to be handled by the municipal secretary’s office.
