Legal Notice – BJP Demands Public Apology From Omar Abdullah Over Defection Allegations
Legal Notice –A fresh political confrontation has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued a legal notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, seeking an unconditional public apology over his recent remarks alleging attempts to destabilise his government. The party has asked Abdullah to withdraw his statements within seven days, warning that legal action, including a defamation claim of Rs 100 crore, will follow if he fails to do so.

BJP Seeks Retraction of Statements
The legal notice was sent on behalf of Jammu and Kashmir BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Paul Sharma through Advocate Parimoksh Seth, who practices before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. According to the notice, the Chief Minister’s public statements were false, defamatory and unsupported by evidence, causing serious harm to the party’s reputation and credibility.
The BJP has insisted that Abdullah must issue a written withdrawal of his allegations, make an unconditional public apology and avoid repeating or circulating similar claims in the future.
Allegations Raised During NC Convention
The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Omar Abdullah during a National Conference convention in Srinagar on July 11. Addressing party workers, the Chief Minister alleged that BJP representatives had attempted to persuade National Conference legislators from the Jammu region to switch political loyalties.
According to Abdullah, one of his party’s MLAs was allegedly approached by a Supreme Court lawyer who was also associated with the BJP. He claimed the legislator was offered between Rs 20 crore and Rs 30 crore, along with a ministerial position and a promise of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, if the MLA agreed to join the BJP.
Abdullah further alleged that after financial incentives and ministerial offers failed to convince party legislators, attempts were made to use the promise of statehood restoration as an additional inducement.
BJP Rejects Claims as Baseless
Rejecting the allegations in their entirety, the BJP described Abdullah’s remarks as completely fabricated and malicious. The notice stated that the accusations had no factual foundation and were made without presenting any supporting evidence.
The party argued that such public statements had the potential to mislead people and tarnish the image of BJP leaders and workers. It maintained that the allegations unfairly questioned the party’s integrity and political conduct without any proof.
Legal Action Threatened
The notice makes it clear that if Omar Abdullah does not comply with the demands within the specified seven-day period, the BJP will pursue both civil and criminal legal remedies available under law.
Among the proposed actions is a defamation suit seeking damages of Rs 100 crore. The party also indicated that it would explore other legal options to protect its reputation if the Chief Minister neither retracts his remarks nor issues a public apology.
Political Tensions Continue
The exchange has intensified the political atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, where relations between the ruling National Conference and the BJP have remained strained on several issues, including governance and the demand for restoration of statehood.
With the legal notice now formally issued, attention will remain focused on whether Omar Abdullah responds within the stipulated timeframe or whether the dispute moves into the courts, potentially leading to a prolonged legal and political battle.
