LeadershipChange – The Karnataka Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is set to hold a crucial meeting on Saturday as the party prepares for a leadership change following the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The gathering is expected to play a decisive role in determining the party’s next leader in the state and pave the way for the appointment of a new Chief Minister.
Meeting Scheduled at Vidhana Soudha
According to party officials, the CLP meeting will take place at 4 p.m. in the Conference Hall of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Siddaramaiah, who currently heads the Congress Legislature Party, will chair the proceedings. The primary agenda is the selection of a new CLP leader, a position that traditionally leads to the Chief Minister’s office when the party is in power.
Senior Congress Leaders to Participate
Several prominent Congress leaders are expected to attend the meeting. These include Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D.K. Shivakumar, AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Legislative Council floor leader N.S. Bose Raju, and the party’s executive presidents.
The announcement regarding the meeting was made by Congress Legislature Party Secretary and MLA Allamaprabhu Patil. Party representatives said all legislators and parliamentary members associated with the Congress have been requested to be present for the discussions.
Attendance of Legislators and Parliamentarians
The party has extended invitations to all Congress MLAs and MLCs from Karnataka. In addition, Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha representing the party have been asked to attend. The broad participation highlights the significance of the leadership decision and the party’s effort to maintain unity during the transition.
Siddaramaiah Returns After Delhi Consultations
Ahead of the meeting, Siddaramaiah concluded a series of consultations with senior Congress leadership in New Delhi. He met Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge before leaving the national capital.
The former Chief Minister was expected to arrive in Bengaluru on Friday evening. During his stay in Delhi, he also met AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal and held discussions with several party leaders regarding the political situation in Karnataka.
Key Discussions Among Senior Leaders
Sources within the party indicated that Siddaramaiah spent time with D.K. Shivakumar and former minister K.J. George during his visit to Delhi. Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar, Congress MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, and former minister K.H. Muniyappa were also seen together, reflecting ongoing consultations among senior leaders ahead of the CLP meeting.
These interactions have fueled speculation about the leadership transition, although the official decision is expected to emerge only after the legislature party meeting.
Indications Point Toward Shivakumar
Meanwhile, Karnataka Minister H.K. Patil suggested that D.K. Shivakumar is likely to take over the state’s top post. Speaking on Friday, Patil said recent developments and statements made after discussions in Delhi had strongly indicated that Shivakumar was the preferred choice for the next Chief Minister.
Patil noted that Siddaramaiah had referred to the discussions held with the party’s central leadership and indicated that a change in leadership was being considered. According to him, those developments made it increasingly evident that Shivakumar could soon assume the responsibility of leading the government.
With the legislature party meeting now approaching, attention remains focused on the Congress leadership’s final decision and the future direction of the Karnataka government.
