Leadership – Karnataka Congress Moves Ahead With Planned Power Transition

Leadership –  A significant political development unfolded in Karnataka after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot formally accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The decision was confirmed through an official notification issued from Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru on Friday, a day after the resignation was submitted. Alongside accepting the resignation, the Governor dissolved the Council of Ministers led by Siddaramaiah. However, the outgoing leader has been asked to continue in office until a new government arrangement is finalized.

Governor Issues Formal Notification

The official order stated that the Governor exercised powers granted under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India to accept Siddaramaiah’s resignation and dissolve the existing Cabinet with immediate effect. The notification also clarified that Siddaramaiah would remain in charge of administrative responsibilities until a successor is formally appointed and sworn in.

The resignation comes amid an internal leadership transition within the Congress party. Sources indicate that the move followed consultations with the party’s central leadership, which has been working on the next phase of governance in the state.

Congress Leadership Holds Key Discussions

As preparations for the formation of a new government gather pace, Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar is expected to meet senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi. Party insiders said the discussions are focused on cabinet restructuring, organizational appointments, and upcoming political strategies.

Senior Congress figures, including Siddaramaiah and AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala, are also expected to participate in meetings with the party’s top leadership. The consultations are likely to shape the composition of the next administration and determine key political appointments.

Cabinet Reshuffle and Representation Under Review

According to party sources, the restructuring process may result in several current ministers not being included in the next Cabinet. Congress leaders are reportedly evaluating options to ensure balanced representation across regions and communities within Karnataka.

One proposal under consideration involves appointing as many as four Deputy Chief Ministers. The move is being discussed as part of efforts to accommodate various social and political groups while maintaining stability within the party.

Yathindra Likely to Receive Larger Role

Sources familiar with the discussions suggest that MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of the outgoing Chief Minister, could be inducted into the new Cabinet. He is reportedly being considered for a major portfolio, a decision that could signal continuity in governance while recognizing Siddaramaiah’s contribution to the party and state politics.

While no official announcement has been made, party leaders are expected to finalize the Cabinet structure after completing consultations in Delhi.

Weather Disruption Alters Travel Plans

Political meetings scheduled in the national capital were briefly affected by adverse weather conditions. D K Shivakumar, who reached Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi late Thursday night, mentioned that difficult weather had impacted travel arrangements.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah’s flight to Delhi was diverted to Jaipur due to unfavorable conditions. During the stopover, he met former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress leader Randeep Surjewala at Jaipur airport.

Later, Siddaramaiah shared details of the interaction through a social media post, describing the meeting with Ashok Gehlot as cordial and productive.

Oath Ceremony Expected After Party Meeting

Congress leaders are expected to finalize the date for the Congress Legislative Party meeting soon. Party sources described the meeting as a procedural step before formally selecting the next Chief Minister.

Following the legislative party gathering, the schedule for D K Shivakumar’s oath-taking ceremony is expected to be announced. At the same time, discussions regarding Rajya Sabha nominations and Legislative Council candidates remain on the party’s agenda.

With four Rajya Sabha seats scheduled for elections in Karnataka, Congress is believed to be in a strong position to secure two seats and remains competitive for a third seat, according to party sources.
