Cabinet Formation Finalised After High-Level Deliberations

The formation of the new administration follows extensive consultations held in New Delhi between senior Congress leaders. Discussions involved Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary KC Venugopal, and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. The leadership worked to finalise the first list of ministers while balancing regional and social representation within the party.

The cabinet selection process also focused on accommodating leaders associated with different power centres within the Congress. These deliberations came shortly after Siddaramaiah stepped down from the chief minister’s post following internal party decisions regarding leadership transition.

Key Leaders Expected in the First Cabinet

Several senior Congress legislators are likely to be included in the first phase of cabinet expansion. Among the names being discussed are KJ George, Dr G Parameshwara, Ramalinga Reddy, Krishna Byregowda, UT Khader, MB Patil, Satish Jarkiholi, Priyank Kharge, Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah and Laxmi Hebbalkar. Former ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao and Eshwar Khandre are also being considered.

Party insiders indicate that Satish Jarkiholi may receive additional organisational responsibilities and could simultaneously hold a ministerial position. Meanwhile, political developments in recent days appear to have affected the prospects of some aspirants seeking cabinet entry.

Deputy Chief Minister Discussions Continue

Speculation continues regarding the deputy chief minister position. Dr G Parameshwara’s name has emerged as a potential candidate due to his administrative experience. While discussions reportedly included the possibility of appointing more than one deputy chief minister, no official confirmation had emerged ahead of the oath-taking ceremony.

Karnataka’s council of ministers can have a maximum strength of 34 members, including the chief minister. Sources suggest that only a portion of those positions will be filled initially, with additional appointments likely after upcoming elections to Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council seats later this month.

Strong Interest Among Ministerial Aspirants

The run-up to the government formation witnessed intense political activity, with many legislators and senior leaders travelling to the national capital to present their case before the party leadership. The remaining cabinet positions are expected to be finalised in a later phase after further consultations.

According to party sources, Shivakumar is expected to serve as chief minister until the next leadership arrangement before the 2028 Assembly elections.

Ceremony Expected to Draw National Attention

The oath-taking event is expected to attract senior Congress leaders from across India, including chief ministers from states governed by the party and representatives of allied political groups.

Known for his strong religious faith, Shivakumar is expected to take the oath invoking his revered deity, Ajjayya Swamy. Religious leaders representing different faiths from across Karnataka have also been invited to attend and bless the new government. Although official invitations are limited, a large turnout of Congress supporters is anticipated.

Bengaluru Looks Ahead to Development Push

Bengaluru has witnessed extensive preparations ahead of the ceremony. Many business leaders and industry observers are expressing hopes that the new administration will prioritise infrastructure growth, urban development and investment promotion. Some have drawn comparisons with previous administrations known for accelerating the city’s transformation into a major economic hub.

Early Policy Announcements Likely

Sources indicate that Shivakumar may unveil several public welfare initiatives soon after assuming office. These proposals reportedly include a dedicated free bus service for students, financial incentives for dairy farmers, and measures aimed at accelerating government recruitment to fill vacant posts.

Such announcements would signal the new government’s focus on addressing everyday concerns related to education, employment and rural livelihoods. Political observers note that early welfare measures have historically played a key role in shaping public perception of newly formed governments in Karnataka.
